« on: March 05, 2007, 05:04:15 PM »
Hi every one. Im interested in doing a s14 swap. I have a e30 318is and would love to drop an s14 in, I would probable go for the s14b20 from the 320is. I wanted to know what has to change on the car if i were to go with this. Dose the motor fit onto the standard 5 speed gearbox, do i need to change the coils can i keep the original radiator and alternator, and finnally dose it requre different engine mounts hope you can help me out thanks guys.

The 320is had an S14 in it?!  I thought only the E30M3 had it.

Where are you located? It was only available in Italy, so if you are state side you will have a hard time finding one to use. You might be lucky, but will it be in the condition you seek...?...

The gearbox will not fit. However you can use one from a M10, M30 or S38. As the 320is was only available in the E30 chassis chances are if you find one they willbe available on the doner motor.

How about using your money on stroking and boreing the M42?

Yeh i know they would be hard to come by but if im lucky i have some relative in italy i might be lucky other wise it will be the 2.3lt. Its just that it would be a cheaper 2lt s14 than the m3 2.3lt  version. So the gear box wont fit thought so but like you said the motor usually comes wit one. But is there any thing else that need to be changed. As far as the m42 its a great motor sodium filled valves dual valve springs high compression its a sweet motor but unfortunatly unless you have the money its hard trying to gain the ponies and being in australia we drive on the right side of the road:p so the steering collom is in the way if i want to go turbo. im thinking about buying a cheap   m42 and doing a complete rebuild on it over a few years, and im talking about a complete rebuild i mean new pistons, rods, crank ,cnc mechined head, new valves, springes, bearings everything. But that would take a few years. Anyway if there is anything else please tell me thanks

i did this swap twice before, i know everything about the S14B20 of the 320is

1- you must install the 265 tranny of the 320is, it's a dogleg, fun to drive, best performance with the engine, the engine will never bolt on to any other transmissions unless they suite the M10, any tranny that fits the M4X series will not fit at all.
2- get the 3:46 LSD diff
3- the radiator will not work, you need the S14 one
4- the electrical work is simply plug and play, you will only need to get the 8000 rpm of the S14, it also has an oil temp sensor that is very important.
5- the engine runs on RON 98 octane only, anything less will kill it, i got a couple of destroyed pistons at home, i know what I'm talking about, this engine does not have knock sensors.
6- get the stock air filter and don't go the cone filter route, also the AFM is not a restriction at all, you will understand when you drive it.

Cheers
