E30 M3 Steering rack (airbag model) fit on 1991 318i
« on: November 12, 2014, 10:56:01 PM »
Hi everyone im new to the e30 and actually just picked up a 91 318i slicktop. The car has some issues, but right now the steering rack is on the priority list. My question is if a 91 e30 M3 steering rack (airbag) would fit on my 91 318i without any modifications. I know that i can do an e36 steering rack, but i really dont want to cut into the firewall if i dont have to.

Thanks everyone.

It is a direct fit but the gain is not much as you will go from 4.0 to 3.5. You gain more from 3.2 or less. If you have a good lead on one then fine, if not, rebuild your or go the e36 route. I did mine and only had file the firewall. The boot doesn't sit right but it works.

The firewall cut is minimal and, I'd guess, once done, you'll never see it again. Turning the steering wheel, however, using a quicker E36 or Z3 rack will happen every day. It will be wonderful every time you drive it. It's on my top 5 mods list. It's worth cutting the firewall.
