Why 16v and not 8v?
« on: June 07, 2015, 06:18:16 PM »
hi,

was doing some research last night.....as I always am! and came across this thread http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=175349

which got me thinking, is this related to just the fact a ford pinto is a good design? or does it relate to every "8v vs 16v"

whats your thought? why is no one developing the m43 range like they are m42/m44? a 1.9ltr m43 has more toque and power than a similair pinto?

this has come up for me as in my type of rallying pinto are well known and very quick. the only other engine that comes close is possible a civic type r BUT they are all revs which arent much use in rallying.

I'd figure those motors are still competitive due to incredibly large production run. There were/are millions of Pinto motors. There's also a large number of sporty cars that got the motor. The humble Pinto motor also had an incredible amount of factory development. Over here the Ford T-bird Turbo Coupes and Mustang SVO used them. The awesome Cosworth/AWD Sierras did too. Lots of power in a cheap package!

In the BMW range, the M10 is still commonly raced. The tii and Turbo models are well sought after, but the M10 wasn't as well-loved in the E21 and E30 (among other series). The M42 isn't commonly used as a performance motor either. Try to find some details about the S42 - it's almost like everyone forgot about it. I've heard a lot of talk about the M42 being an overbuilt gas saver/economy motor compared to the M5x and S5x series.

Sorry Dave, the cossies are runing YB engines.. and are not cheap :(
The older sapphire cosworths (4door sierra's) are starting at €6000 for a bad example.. escort rs cosworths (never delivered in the usa!) are starting at €15.000 for a decent one.
thats proper money for a 1992/1995 year build car. (sapph's are build 1980's)

but you are right about power!
950kg E36 from 3/94 ex M42B18, now with Saab B204l turbo power.
