Technical Bulletin on Transmission?

Mods: feel free to add/edit this to the reference section if it hasn't already been talked about.

Tranny differences between 318's:

After trying to R&R the engine and struggling to mate it up over 8 hours total, I was thinking this whole time that the shaft just wasn't aligning correctly for some reason. I even went out and bought an engine leveler to see if that would help. After a few more bitch sessions, I decided to take the tranny out and mate them together outside of the car. I would then plan on dropping the whole unit in as one assembly.

Fast forward to today. As I was putting on the new clutch, my clutch alignment tool would work in one engine and not the other. I then noticed the pilot bearings were different. This led me to look at the tranny and sure enough I noticed one tranny had a 'slightly' smaller shaft than the other one. I also noticed the pilot bearings were different as well.

I went ahead and examined all the numbers on the casing and besides the manufacturing date, all part #'s and revision #'s match up to each other. This is pretty strange. I would think BMW would at least put out a different revision #.

One theory is that one of the trannies could've been rebuilt but I find that highly unlikely given the condition of the tranny.

Am I missinig something here or is this common knowledge among the 318 crowd? Bottom line is I could've had this done last weekend when it was 50 degrees. Now I have to fight with working in 25 degree temps.

** Cliff Notes: The 318 Getrag 240 tranny can come with small or large shaft and still have the same part # and revision #'s.

Now time to go back out and finish the job.

This is good info especially before you get into it!

Mahalo!

ps. I can't imagine what you are going through having to work in 25 or 50 degrees! Bummers!

this is modifyed old head bolt. You have to put it to the hole and then put something to the hole to keep that tool there, old bolt or something like this and then tighten the nut, which will extract your bearing.

Primitive but a working tool nonetheless. I was fortunate to have the matching tranny that came with the motor. I was initially just going to install the engine but ended up taking the old tranny out and replacing it with the one that was mated to the spare motor.

"Man shapes tools and then tools shape men." Neat.
