Engine /trans swap from auto to 5 speed wiring help
« on: October 09, 2015, 02:18:21 PM »
Swapped a 92 M42 in place of a 96 M44. Also auto transmission to manual . I want to remove the auto trans computer box and the harness to clean up the original harness . Question is can I trace all the auto trans computer wires and cut them and remove them and everything else be ok ??

Welcome to the forum. :)

Personally, I would not cut any wiring until I have the car running. Even better, I'd just tuck the wiring into the harness and tape over it.

You could probably chase the whole harness down, but I'm with Kef here. Just jump the inhibitor switch so your motor runs, connect the manual reverse switch (like you've probably already done), then tape the old harness out of the way. If you've already stripped the interior I'd go for it, otherwise don't bother.

I'm not sure what the E36 harness connects to, but when I swapped an E30 the transmission harness connected to the gauge cluster, trip computer and even cruise control unit. I didn't bother with the chassis harness except for jumping the inhibitor relay, just left the rest alone.
