What sensors does the ECU use to calculate the timing advance? Does it use the cam sensor or crank sensor to see when piston 1 is in TDC? BTW RED IS 91, does your engine shake a lot...mine shakes more then I think is normal which leads me to believe one of the cylinders is not contributing properly but it's only at idle, when I raise the rpm the engine seems to be running fine.

My motor doesn't shake alot .It's just sputtering .Runs better with increased rpms but still hesitates above 4K rpms.
According to bentley the camshaft does fuel injection timing and knock control.
Crankshaft sensor must also have something to do with timing but it doesn't mention it in the manual .It just says it won't start without a position signal.
Thanks bmwman for the info . Tomorrow I'll get the crankshaft Pos. sensor and install it to see if it makes a difference .If not then it will be the Idle Position sensor .

sounds like a cylinder isn't firing, or its missfiring. check for spark, and fouled plugs. if its not a great spark replace the plugs. if you have excellent spark, then check for fuel and compression.

UPDATE
Installed new crank position switch. It was pretty easy .Had to remove the AC pump which wanted to be stubborn. The hardest part was laying on the ground in 20* F weather.Thank God for insulated coveralls and  air tools.
Well, the car runs alot better and pulls really well. I checked the sensor for ohms and had 590 which is still half of what bentley says. Either I don't know what I'm doing with that multi meter or bentley f**ked that up also .Since I had around the same on my new and old crank pos. sensor I'd say bentley is incorrect.
I still have a slight hesitation but I have a new TPS on order and we'll see what that does .
When changing the tps is there any adjustment needed ?
The Quest continues

are you telling me that i'v been waiting 3 weeks for a part that is already fine on my car... I'm not impressed with this bently anymore... now i have to figure out why the hell my car is barely running...
never mind, my sensor reads 518, which is still 10% less then a new sensor, so hopefully thats my problem *fingers crossed*

edit: by the way i checked the new cam sensor, and the readings were 960 ohms, with my multi meter. mine reads 948 ohms , so i'm good there. Just thought i'd share the actual value instead of the bently value.

3 weeks for a part !!!  Is it coming by dogsled ;)
I've driven through BC 4 or 5 times on my way to and from alaska in the late 80's and 90's and  it is by far one of the prettiest areas I've ever been in .
Why 3 weeks???
My car does run alot better with the new crank sensor .Hopefully yours will to .
