Fuel Pump isn't pumping - Please Help Me Troubleshoot!!
« on: December 20, 2006, 07:42:04 PM »
Guys,

Please help me troubleshoot this problem.
My M42 will crank but not start.
Previously, I had the same problem, it turned out to be the fuel pump relay as I was able to hear the pump run by jumping terminals 30 and 87 on the fuel pump relay socket. This time around, after jumping, no fuel pump noise. I also replaced fuse #11. Heres where things get a bit confusing. I do not have the manual to indicate if its a 7.5a or 15a fuse, i tried both new fuses and nothing.

The fuel pump itself is 6mo new. Now, the relay i last replaced wasn't even the proper relay for it. It had only 4 prongs as opposed to 5 prongs, which I found when i got a new one at the dealer. The proper one has 2 87 terminals parallel to each other, where the old one that i replaced only had 1 87 terminal.

When I attempt to read if theres any power to the fuel pump, (I probably am not metering it right) but I cannot find voltage. I've tried to meter it once before when everything worked and nothing then as well. I'm not crazy about replacing the in-tank fuel pump again as it was a PITA to secure and lock in place.

What do you guys suggest I check next??

Run wires from the battery direct to the pump. Wiggle the connector to the pump. Sometimes the socket and prongs don't connect. Pry the prongs apart slightly to exert just a little force on the  socket.
