what is this? and where can i get one? coolant system
« on: October 10, 2012, 01:57:41 PM »
hi guys ive got a e30 318is 2door coup.
ive noticed that my coolant level has droped very quickly and alot, so doing alot of research, and testing refilling, bled, searching for leaks i found nothing. but today i got to work and finally mr car decided it needed a wee. managed to get it home all save and sound keeping a very keen eye on the water temp, i got home and found the leak.
on the bottom of the rad, resivour side there is a big hex plastic nut with a 12mm allen key on the inside. it is on the bottom of the shroud facing the floor, it was loose.
so naturaly i tightened it up, but i found it goes tight then slips, almost if its rounded,
so finally my question is what is it? where can i get one?
ive had a look in all the usial places on the internet and on pellican parts, and no luck.

ive also found it on real oem but it isnt listed
i think its item 15 on the link below

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AF92&mospid=47256&btnr=17_0502&hg=17&fg=05

i work in a engineering ferm
so do i buy one if i can find it or if any one has one for sale??
or shoud i make one?
does any one know if its internal or external thread??
as i havnt taken it off the car yet, or if any ones got a link or picture of it

many thanks

It is a cap that plugs the spot where some later model Euro cars had a coolant level sensor.

The cap PN is 17111719430. There is a PN for a rubber o-ring that goes in there as well, or at least it looks like one does in the diagram. My guess would be that the cap is OK and that the o-ring just needs replacing. It is PN 61311361249.

I tried to get the cap off of my radiator once, and it would not move. In fact, I was afraid something would break, so I just left it alone...no leaks yet thankfully.

Yep - a lot of the parts on the e30 M42 were meant for the e34, e36, etc.  Happily, you'll see a surprising amount of cross-references on BMWs.
