Advice: Cross Brace 93 E36 M42 318i
« on: April 25, 2011, 11:20:27 AM »
Just how valuable is a Strut Cross brace as pictured below to to a minimum powered 318i such as mine.
Keeping in mind that as a Driver I value Slalom type handling above hp/torque.
Although in a balanced package all three are important.
Just trying to make the ride more enjoyable.
 Type of product pictured below...

Your money would be better spent for the lower x-brace.  They are stock on m3's and convertibles.

Thank You, duly noted. Makes sense that the Xbrace would be a better choice.
I am familiar with them from Ford Mustangs.

I am tempted towards the Strut Cross Brace due to the fact that I have been offered an Ultra Racing for the sum of $50.
I have one more question. I have seen photos of the Cross Brace installed both on this Forum as well as elsewhere. My confusion is that seen the Cross Brace installed in both directions. Towards the Windshield and alternatively towards the Radiator/Headlights.
My question, Which direction is correct or should I phrase that Best?

The x-brace doesn't have anything to do with the struts.  It goes underneath the car and ties the front sub-frame to to the body.http://www.koperformance.com/BMW/oe_maintenance_misc/oem_x_brace_51_71_8_410_212/oem_x_brace_51_71_8_410_212.htm

The upper helps tighten the car up, for that little money I'd order it, and get the lower xbrace off ebay about 170 bucks.

Yes, I know and understand. Sorry if my post above somehow led you to the wrong conclusion. I had seen pictures of both applications before I had started this thread. My question was as to the comparable effectiveness of each and you answered that.....

Thanks for the follow up anyway.

The only downside of a top strut tower brace is if you get tagged from the side in front its more likely that the WHOLE front end is toast..

Handling wise I've only found a couple cars that didn't feel tighter in hard turns with one.

Worst case it looks cool LOL

Doesnt it really depend on how stiff your suspension is? Meaning if your springs and shocks have alot of play then the car body won't be twisting in a corner(or u won't feel it twisting). Similar to the only reason a rear brace is required is with racing/ coilover suspension to keep from ripping out your shock towers...
