Is this part necessary or crucial?

so i was cruising real oem and found a part called "Torsional vibration absorber" this part islike a solid cover for the Guibo/flexdisk.....i dont have one. a year ago i replaced the guibo and did not have one before and do not have one now.

is this part new? or not relatedtomy car...1993 E36 318is M42 manual production date 10/92

E30s didn't have them, FWIW.

All the 5-speed six-cylinder e30's I've owned had them.  They make it really annoying to drop the front of the drive shaft, that's for sure.  I've only seen them on the six-cylinders.

It's definitely a two-piece vibration damper, not sure how necessary it is.  I'd suspect the guibo & two-piece CSB mounting ring does just as much good.

i was told on bimmerforums that it was an E30 part that was also used on the E36...some people say they have it and some say they dont.  i"ve heard of people finding it on their 1993 and their 1997...?  ok well obviously my cars runs find without it cause i've never had one...althought i have already had a failed Guibo and installed a brand new one about 2 years ago. and i believe it is still doing fine.

bottom line i suppose is would i benefit in a tighter better responce with this part?

it is a 2 piece part?  so this is used with the Guibo correct.  it just kind of houses the guibo?

Yep, it's a steel rim and a steel center with (I think) a rubber center section.  The shell moves slightly to absorb vibrations, I'd assume.  It's very small both in mass and diameter though; I can't think it'd make much difference...other than making it difficult to get at the guibo bolts.  The e30 seems to be a slightly different design though, it's retained by the transmission output yoke nut.

I'd post a diagram but I'm having trouble getting to RealOEM.  I hope it's not down for long.

so is this something i cannot buy and put on with use of my current Guibo?  does it require a different guibo?  i purchased the guibo listen on realoems drive shaft assy parts list. for my model

I'd think you could wrap it over any manual transmission guibo, but personally I'd skip it.  I'm not sure why it's there.  The only difference I've seen between different models and transmissions is the thickness of the guibo disk, not the diameter.
