failed air care
« on: September 16, 2006, 08:12:00 PM »
so i failed air care... the running tests are fine, but the idle is a little rough and causes the hydro carbons to be way to high at idle... so heres what i'm planning on doing. i took the plugs off and they're white, so its running really lean. so i need and adjustable fpr, which one do you guys recomend

adj fuel presure regulator
new plugs
new vacume lines
new air filter
o2 sensor
maybe new coil packs? like the bav auto ones... anyone know where to get these cheap?

anything else to add to this list? whats your advice on the coil packs. what are signs of coil packs starting to pack it in...?

I'd do all the other stuff before messing with the adjustable FPR or the new coil packs.

And even then, I dunno that those BavAuto coil packs provide that much punch, but they are about the same price as regular replacement ones, maybe a bit more but not much.

If you've never replaced the coil packs, and you don't know when it was done, now would probably be a good time to do so.

What about your plug wires, ever replaced those?

i should have said that i have big cams which is why i want the adj fpr so that i can increase fuel delivery to make up for the cams, also the bavauto coil packs are supposed to be better, and have more punch then the oem ones, the coil packs are the original coil packs.

as for wires, the PO put the nology "hot wires" on, and they seem to deliver a good spark.

Ahh, ok.

I'd still go through and replace the air filter, maybe the O2, and any vacuum lines that are even questionable before I would go further.

well the only questionable vacume line is the intake boot as everything else has been replaced. so thats what i'm gona do first. i havn't done the O2 sensor for 2 or 3 years, so i figure that could use a changing as well... so i'll do those and report back if i experience any changes.

high hydrocarbons, but only at idle. its got a loapy idle which is causing the problem, and the plugs are white which indicates that it is running lean.

as for the plug and play 02 sensor, it says it comes plug and play, but at most you just have to put 4 but connectors onto your old plug which takes about 5 min.

Nick, how did the NGK sensor turn out for you? Did it plug right into the harness?

i have an NGK in my car right now, bmw tested it and said it lags a little but i bet if you solder the joints it should fix that. What was the NGK part number as i couldn't remember which one i ordered... and yes its 4 wires, and you just use 4 butt connectors.
