Power steering noise at full lock
« on: September 20, 2010, 01:42:05 PM »
Last week I replaced all of my power steering hoses.  Now, when I turn the wheel to full lock, something makes a screeching sound.  It does it in both directions, while moving and while stopped.  Other than the hoses I did not remove/repair/touch anything else.  It has never done this before.

Any idea what could be causing this?  Do I need to bleed the power steering pump again?

Thanks! ;)

I hope it's not happening just because you have new hoses.  In that case it'll go away after some wear & tear.  ;)

the belt is probably loose, you shouldnt ever be turning the wheel against full lock its bad for the system

I'll check the belt.  Sometimes it's necessary to go to full lock, like to get out of a parking space.  I've just never had this noise before but it definitely sounds like a belt slipping.

It is the belt slipping.  You are putting full pressure on the system and it is overpowering the pump, causing the pulley to slow and the belt to slip.  If you need full throw to get out of a spot, turn it all the way until you hear the noise and then back off just a touch.
