Stuck Wheel Bolts
« on: October 12, 2010, 09:42:33 AM »
Hi guys,

I got a bit of a problem. Bought this old car a about a month ago and i need to take the wheels off. Now this car is from canada and has seem many winters which means lots of snow and salt. The wheels that are on there are winters which have not been touched in a couple years. So...every wheels is stuck on. The shitty part about all this is that bmw uses wheel bolts not nuts. I cant seem to get the WD40 where it needs to be, which is behind the wheel. Also, if i get break a bolt im guessing that its a HUGE pain to fix.

Do you guys have any suggestions or secrets on getting stuck wheel bolts off?

I take that silly cranked BMW log wrench & stand on the bolts.  If you're careful not to let the wrench get crooked it'll break them loose.  If you have steel wheels you can spray some PB Blaster in the center, but alloys aren't so easy.

I toss the spare against the inside of the wheels. If that doesn't do it, I leave all four lug bolts loose and carefully push or drive the car a few feet to break the wheels loose from the corrosion on the rotor face.  Don't let the wheel rest on less than all four lug bolts, it'll likely bend it or even snap it off.

Bolt wise you're just going to have to apply more force.  Spray em to death then use a cheater bar.

The wheels themselves will be fun too.-  My car is rust free and my fronts were still a pain.  Do what dave said there.
