You have all the parts for the e30 intake & exhaust, don't count out M42s from a later 'vert, e36 or z3.  I'm not 100% positive of interchange, but they can't be that much different.  From what I've seen, even the M44 has a few detail differences like knock sensors, an OBDII DME, forged crank delete, etc.

I'd be iterested in seeing crank endplay and compression readings on a salvage engine...but mine is still tight at 273K miles.  Sure it needs new gaskets all around, but cheap used motors are definitely worth a risk.

I also agree about the difference between the M20 & M42.  They're both fun, but the M42 is much more fun to drive on a daily basis.  It's just a little lighter in all the right places.  I'll bet a MarkD chip, COP kit & bigger injectors would help even more.  And while you have the motor out, a single mass flywheel too!

"Clear water cyl head" did some work for my shop .. They did it poor enough that we have  restocked our engine  machine shop.  I mainly do race VW heads, and old custom stuff like Jaguar.
   I am set up for service of these heads. The nice thing about the small  stem valves, is that the guides are still OK. Most of the time.
 I have dome two of these in the last 3months. Most of my parts come from Pelican. Nice prompt service, quality parts.  I lightly grind the seats, hand lap the valves to the seats. water check the whole setup, change the seals.  Usually finish with  a light( 004-8) surface of the head to clean up any corrosion.  If you have the head cut any, make sure that you also cut the front cover.
 Labor runs about 400$,
 Takes about 2 weeks for parts and service.
  Parts are lifters, valves, head set, chain rails, tensioner, cam wheels.  
   If the bottom end is OK the cams are OK , as a rule.
    Before doing anything with the head, make sure that the oil pump and screen were working, and you should consider puling the front rod bearing. If they are shot, dont waste  your time with this head.
