Arcter, it depends on your definition of "excessive" oil consumption. I had an '88 m20 (325iS) that ate a good 1-1.8q of oil every month but ran like a pavement hungry monster. And I flogged the hell out of that engine (272 Schrick cam, Jim C 93octane chip, boxed K&N CAI, etc etc). Whenever I would cold start it, or should I say, when I could get the damn thing to turn over in 38 degree weather or lower, it would give me a good little bit of blue smoke. Honestly, I sold it with 237xxx on the clock and it pulled just as hard when I sold it as it did when I bought it at 189xxx. Still ate the same ammount of oil between changes and I ran "commodity" Synthetics for 4000 miles in between.
