BTCC E30 318iS
« on: December 22, 2009, 08:39:59 PM »
I just found out about E30 318iS competing in the BTCC in 1990 and 1991.  Robin Brundle drove one in 1990 under the Techspeed banner and in 1991, Angus MacKay and Alistair Lyall raced under the R&D Motorsport banner.

If anyone has more information or better pics, please post them.

The e30 just looks so right on a track, doesn't it?  Wouldn't mind that XR4Ti either...

Doubtful.

This was a car run by two small independent teams (I believe its the same car - different seasons/teams).  So I doubt it was running anything exotic. Likely just a race prepped M42 street motor. The 2 liter Super Touring formula was introduced in 1990 and became the only BTCC class in 1991.

Every other BMW Super Touring BTCC team during this period was running a 2.0 liter S14 engine. These smaller displacement S14s also powered the 92-94 E36 318i bodied BTCC cars. When the S14 homogulation eligibility ran out in 1995 BMW introduced the S42 motor to replace it (and changed the model designation to 320i?). Some BMW teams ran the S42 in 1994 for development, but it didn't become a customer option until 95-96.

I wonder where this car is now.
