Engine management / M42 cold running problem
« Last post by M42-Matt on November 11, 2023, 01:02:38 PM »
I am struggling to diagnose a '91 318i M42 cold running problem.  At start up, it idles fine, but backfires out the exhaust if I give it throttle.  After warming up, it runs great.
1. I have checked the coolant and intake air temperature sensors, the resistance of those both look fine.
2. I get no CEL, but I and am seeing an occasional cam position sensor fault when I pull the fault codes.  I cannot find a new genuine part, so I have tried replacing the sensor with a new Facet aftermarket replacement, and also tried a good (I think) used genuine BMW sensor and still get the occasional code.  I checked the cam timing relative to the crank position and it looks fine (with cam holder tool on back of cams and a 5/16" pin in the flywheel recess).
3. Checked for vacuum leaks and un-metered air entry multiple times.  (The idle air and crankcase vent heaters were bypassed long ago.)
4. Compression and ignition system test good.
5. Fuel pressure and delivery rate test good.
6. Replaced O2 sensor with new Bosch part for good measure.
7. Replaced spark plugs and air filter for good measure.
8. Swapped ECU with a good used one.

I have two other good running 1991 318i's and can swap parts as needed.

Suggestions?
Any subtleties in the cam position sensing or timing that I need to better check?
Should I buy a scanner with live data capability?  If yes, which one?

Thanks in advance.

Been busy with life but still enjoying the e30. After searching 3 years, I finally found the elusive air intake box snorkel.
Here a picture of the gap where the tube should go:

I sourced one that had a little bit of grime build up and the bellows had two tears. I did the bellow repair with crazy glue and RTV as I found online, and then gave it the SEM treatment. SEM Soap, gray scuff pad and then SEM trim paint. It came out pretty nice.

And here it is installed:

I discovered a few days ago that C5 Corvette Calipers (available on Holden cars here) are a direct bolt on up front, so was going to give those a crack and jumped on to have a search and see if anyone had tried it.

Have you tried those C5 calipers? What is size of brake disc did you use?

You can also swap e46 325i and 328i rear brakes. Discs are 294mmx19mm and hand brake is same like e36.

It's the same torque specs as the M50 engine:

Just wondering if anyone on the forum has got the torque specs for the ARP head kit?

I've bought one with the part number 201-4M42 but the torque specs didn't come with the kit and when I put the part number into ARP's website it doesn't come up.

Wondering if anyone's fitted ARP head studs, and if so, what torque specs you used?

Cheers

Electrical / 1995 E36 crank but doesn't start after battery was disconnect
« Last post by moekazem on July 03, 2023, 01:14:10 AM »
I have a 1995 318iC which is not in use and in the garage.
I have disconnected the battery for about 24 days and now the car crank but does not start.
The car did not have any problem and would start perfectly before the battery disconnection

Any idea?

I'm not sure that's part of the motor. Looks like tooling, perhaps part of a hex key socket? I'd guess it fell into the sump after some work was performed.
