Welcome to the club! If you're familiar with the '02, the E30 will present no challenges. I'd be tempted to 'scan' it for codes with the stomp test, check the subframe & suspension bushings, ball joints, etc.

The E30 does have some vulnerability to rust, but hopefully the car didn't spend time in a well-salted area of the country.

There's plenty of room for upgrades too, and most are the same you'd do with the '02. My favorites were a power sunroof and cruise control, but the sky is the limit.

Sold my 1972 2002tii, 74 tii, 76 parts car and  bought a 1991 318is. Had to have A/C. I have incomplete service records. Timing chain and guides, water pump, thermostat, front struts, all have been replaced. Clutch, brakes, electrics all work. Compression great, passed CA. smog. Very clean so what to check, change, inspect going forward. Car has 244k miles. I plan on keeping this car for the next 20 years. Not a racer but enjoy the roads of Northern CA. Also have a BMW R90/6 in the garage. Thanks for any input.

I’m convinced there is no C191 plug on this car. All sensors and fuel injection wiring go into that box which goes right to the bulkhead.

Can anyone clarify / confirm?

According to the 318is ETM, C191 is located rear of the LH top corner of the engine. Reference fig 1, 7000-1. 8500-10 shows a picture of the connector pinning.

The C191 plug is on page (7000-o) but when I had the whole intake manifold off yet there was no sign of it.

It's not shown in the engine loom diagram either (see attached).

Is it the one pictured? I thought that was the C101? Or is that in fact the C191 and the C101 is the OBD port?

It's in that area according to what I can tell in the manual picture.

You can download the manual from the FAQ/Reference, M42 Reference section. It's pinned 5th thread down from the top.
