Engine + Driveline / Engine start after stand-by period
« on: April 26, 2013, 03:19:06 AM »
E30 M42B18 1989:
Car downtime <= 1 day:
At any season engine starts immediately. Run smooth after start.

Car downtime > 1 day, but < 3 days:
Engine starts not perfectly, for first 10 seconds idle jumping 600-1100.

Car downtime 4-7 days:
Few times was necessary to crank for very long time.

Engine + Driveline / Spark Plug Condition
« on: April 16, 2013, 06:58:09 AM »
Hi! Here is a photo that I took this morning when checking my spark plugs.

Cylinder 2 plug is really different from others:

3 month ago when I first time noticed this - cyl 2 spark plug was changed to new one.
Then I swapped cyl 1 & 2 coils to see if its a cause. As we can see - no difference.
Plug wires are fresh - was installed 10 000 km ago.
Compression - 14 approx.
When testing for spark - when plug is outside of engine - its present.
When disconnecting plug wires - engine is responding on every cylinder same way.
No fault codes.

So, why plug N2 is not looking normal?

Could be that fuel mixture is more rich. ..
Thanks for participation! However more answers causing more quetions.. :)

- more rich without Lambda?
- more rich=>idle more smooth?
- rough idle with Lambda<=air leaks in intake?

So finally vibration issue solved by removing non-stock exhaust bracket.
Now I'm really enjoying driving with this engine.

Ater this most interesting question for me its fuel consumption:
Highway - 7 ltr / 100 Km
City (high traffic) - 14 ltr / 100 Km

For comparison my past carburetor M10:
Highway - 8 ltr / 100 Km
City (high traffic) - 14 ltr / 100 Km (same figure)

Diff is 3.91

Ok, closing issue.. running without lambda for 3-rd month already. Driveability still same like before and with sensor.

Question - what can be cause of that fact that without Lambda idle is more smooth that with?

Halleluiah! Its solved just now. I just removed one exhaust mount made by welder which was almost directly transferring exhaust vibration to car frame. Conclusion - all suppose to be so close to OEM as possible.

To release my crazy design ideas 2 years ago I have tried to make my car looks like "Black&White Umbrella Corp Car". Maybe OEM Alpinweiss color was better, but that period I was happy to create something new for me.

... Maybe its more correct for same reason to use Idle CO adjustment screw on AFM?

For a current moment I will hope that its not chain.
First would like to try/check following:
1) In a week time I will get camshaft alignment tool to put correct camshafts position. (Now its aligned with 1-2 degree tolerance (already got engine like this));
2) Would like to install OEM type exhaust/currently I use m20 twinpipe.

P.S. More exactly - vibration/drone happening at 2500 rpm.

Very sadly if all described above will be real cause, however, my engine dont making excessive noise at this rpm, just vibrating. If chain will need to be replaced, I think that instead of this job I will better buy complete engine again. Set from E36 overhere will cost around 800 Usd.

Feelings with M42 after M10 are not what I was expecting. More HP is great, but my M10 was running more smooth. Plus fuel consumption (within city) are same for both engines. This I cannt understand - how Carburetor engine can take same fuel amount that Motronic setup.
