Engine + Driveline / About to do cylinder head swap...questions
« on: August 26, 2012, 05:38:59 AM »
Alim.

The main difference the the heads are,
The E30 heads had 7mm valve stems and a double valve spring.
The E36 head had mainly 6mm Valve stems and single valve springs. You will need to check the casting date on your head. Early E36 m42's had the E30 setups.

As for the blocks, the E36 block had knock sensors and provisions for the knock sensors casted on the block.

Later E36's have the updated parts that makes the early M42 ticking bombs. Updated timing covers, a deflector rail for the timing chains instead of an idler gear, and also the plastik oil pressure valve.
Again however these very in the production date of your motor.

There are two oil pressure valves in your engine, the one you are concerned about is the one in the timing case. (Not really in the block.) It is located under the oil filter casing. You can see it once the filter case is removed. (The unit it self, and not just the cap.)

The parts you want to replace are:
5,6,7,8.

Engine + Driveline / Anyone Converted to 318ti Driveline?

Im not sure if using the e36 shifter would levitate the length difference. Since I have a welder i was going to weld it anyways and not bother the search in the BMW parts bin.

I'm sure theres info out there on selector rod lengths. The good thing is the aluminum shifting arm from the e30 is a perfect fit.

Edit:

Yes the Z3 and z3ms have the same subframe as ours, so it does bolt on. I too found one thats close to our prices there. However I believe they have tall gears, 3.15; atleast the one I was looking at. I'd want one in the 3.9-3.6 max area.

In my rebuild, Im sticking with 1.8l but for maximum head flow and rpms. So a short gearing will help me with the lack of torq and power.

I'm in Germany and have access to these cranks. I'll let know of the results.

I will be putting in the g250 once my motor is built myself. Little info I came by in the searches, other than that the lower shifting rod must be shortened. And the e30 drive shaft is shortened from the rear most nut.

Now I am not sure if the diff flange is what shortens the length or the drive shaft. The g250 itself is about 2-3 inches longer than the g240.

If you're swapping tranny, shaft and diff, then I don't think they're any issues.

My swap however is just the tyranny with e30 drive shaft and stock 4.10. Until I can find a damn 3.9 or 3.7 LSD here in Germany. 400-700 euros for a used LSD here.

God I miss somethings back home.

LPG conversions for the m42 is prevalent here in Germany. So it's doable.

Honestly, you can get a head for cheap, CL or ebay. The biggest thing however is you will want to pressure check the head no matter where you get it.

Here is an ad from CL in woodbridge, its not that far.

I grew up in Bethesda btw.

Also, if you have an E30 M42, a late model head is a good upgrade.

you will want to either swap the whole gauge cluster from the 318 to the 325. Techcinally you only need the coding plug. But swapping the whole thing is just as much work as swaping the coding plug.
