M42 Buyer's Guide / Talk about your buying experience
« on: September 20, 2007, 04:59:08 PM »
Ok, to be frank, the buying experience was pretty shitty. I was informed the car only had some vaccum problems which were going to be fixed before i bought it. But when i gave the guy the money and started driving it around nothing was wrong. i get 2 miles from the buying location and the engine overheats, wtf right? This is what i get for buying off of ebay, and not only ebay, but kansas. The car had a cracked cylinder head, $300 for a new one + $100 for the appropriate parts, And a new windsheild. Plus the muffler was hanging on by the hangers. wasn't even attached to the connecting pipe from the catalytic converter.
The car itself, its my first car, i love it to death, but soon im parting with it, im no mechanic and this car needs so much T.L.C.
I might get another one later, i am definately buying another e30 for my dad, he loves these little cars. Probably a convertible.
Next time, im going to do more research on the car before i make a 3 hour trip to go drive it back another 3 hours, just to find i have to make another trip to bring it back on a trailer, and then spend a month to fix it.
I learned quite a bit about cars, but im still a newbie.

Ok, well there wasnt any fluid in the car or outside on the ground, given it had 12 hours to do it, could have soaked into the ground by then, but i didnt see anything.

Forgive me for an obvious answer, but im not exactly a genius when it comes to cars.
Yesterday i was driving my car around no problem, but today i got in it to drive and the clutch had no tension whatsoever, and its not shifting without grinding. I had one idea its fluid, another idea is the throw out bearing is messed/broken.

Need help, thanks guys.

Engine + Driveline / Warm start issues
« on: August 28, 2007, 10:58:10 AM »
I am having this exact same problem. It starts fine over night, but when you start it up after you've driven it somewhere the engine seems to be lacking, but after about 2 minutes it seems to run fine.

I assumed it was the fuel pump too, but i havent had time to experiment with it.
Let me know if you find out whats going on.

Electrical / Turn Signal Connections
« on: August 10, 2007, 03:12:01 PM »
I would like to know where the connections/wiring for the turn signals are, last night mine stopped working, we just got over a trunk light problem now the turn signals arent working, i drove the car for about 15 minutes parked it and hung out with some friends for a few hours drove it again, parked it for another hour and a half, drove it and the turn signals worked again. but then stopped after a few minutes, i might have turned my stereo up within this process, would that have anything to do with a wiring problem, i also drove my car pretty hard, and it might have vibrated the wiring in some way making a bad connection somewhere, Anyone have any experience with this?

Electrical / Draining Battery - Different Situation
« on: July 28, 2007, 01:26:03 PM »
So My battery is draining, the only thing different in the car is a new head unit, the battery had some corrosion on it from before, and one terminal had blue shit coming out of it.
2 days after putting the head unit in - after driving fine for those 2 days, and the head unit working perfect - the battery drains, i jump start it, and the trunk light doesnt work, but neither does my head unit, or my spedometer or tachometer. the gas guage works, and i dont leave the car running long enough to see if the temp guage works.
However the car runs after i jump start it but then drains again over night.
I tried charging it over night with a battery charger and it didnt hold the charge, but it did jump start.
All of my fuses were fine except one, i replaced it and still nothing.
Do i have a bad battery? or do i have something short circuiting?

Electrical / Inspection Lights

Under the spedometer theres a set of lights that go from green to yellow to red, for the past month its been on yellow, and a few days ago it went to red.
None of the drive has changed, i was just wondering what those lights are connected to and what would make them "alert" me?

Engine + Driveline / Head Gasket Replacement
« on: June 18, 2007, 11:28:53 PM »
You all might shoot me for this, but when i replaced my cylinder head i didnt use the tdc tool you're "suggested" to use, we moved the lobes with channel locks, and turned the engine till the two center pistons were at the bottom, and then put the timing chain in, and rolled the sprockets onto the chain into place. then we adjusted the chain to where the little arrows on each of the sprockets point "up" along with the block.
just holding the cams in place with channel locks and a wrench.
Engine runs fine, you all can start aiming.
but she runs. cant blame me for that one.
