wow, you've got your hands full, good luck!

Do post pics when you are done restoring them, especially the 2002!

The car is back from surgery!

-fixed the loud thumping sound under handbrake when pulling away from a stop. Turns out the rubber ring of the center shaft bearing was totally worn out and missing. Decided to chance the whole driveshaft and center shaft bearing with a remanufactured one from Driveline ($375). The front u-joint on the drive shaft was really smooth, the rear one was a tiny bit stiff. Probably could have gotten away with with just changing the center shaft bearing, but I thought what the hell I don't want to have to do this again anytime soon. I also changed the guibo was I was down there.

-had a woodpecker sound under the steering wheel when driving straight between 40 to 60 mph. I heard that tightening the big nut (1 1/4 inch wrench) on the steering column would take care of it. We will see...

-changed transmission fluid (ATF required on a manual transmission!) and differential fluid. Got some gear oil on my hands and clothes, and, man oh man does that stuff stink!

-changed spark plugs and measured compression. compression in each cylinder was 210, 210, 215, 225 psi, pretty good!

Still have a small oil leak between the upper and lower oil pans but will figure this out later....

lulu was helping me out by passing me tools!

How-To's / Engine failure due to pan gasket shift/bolt loss (e30 only)
« on: March 11, 2012, 08:44:19 PM »
Thanks for this thread!

169K on mine and 5 bolts had come lose and had dropped on the lower oil pan! Only one one bolt was still up and it was only finger tight!

I have a small oil leak between the upper oil pan and the engine block. I think that with these screws back in place the leak will stop!

 Score!

I was looking for a cheap daily driver when I stumbled on this beauty. It was $2000 and rust free. During the test drive I had discovered some issues with it, but the motor reved so freely and smoothly that I decided to take the plunge. I have discovered a few more issues during the first week of ownership, but nothing major. As I write the car is on 4 jack stands in the drive way, patiently waiting for surgery. In the meantime my computer has hundreds of webpages open to help me learn about the 'guibo', the 'mess under the intake' etc....
