Engine + Driveline / Differential should spin smoothly?
« on: February 25, 2008, 10:09:57 AM »
I'm removing my open diff and replacing it with a newer medium case LSD. If I spin the output flanges on the open diff, it feels rough (it alternates between being hard to spin and easy to spin every few degrees of rotation). This isn't correct, is it?

I suspected the differential was bad given some issues I was having...I just wanted to confirm that spinning a output shaft/flange on an open diff shouldn't feel notchy.

General Topics / M42 parts around lansing, MI>???

I'm in the same area but haven't really found anything worthwhile in town...

East Lansing is the only place with a 'nightlife' this time of year. Downtown lansing/old town pep up a bit during the summer months.

What color/body do you drive? Mine is a Diamonschwartz 4dr 318i on black basketweaves that is spending most of the winter in the garage (replacing the rear driveline).

I've searched the posts and can't seem to find a definitive answer. Does a e30 medium case differential bolt in (without modification) to my 1991 m42 318i?

I don't care about ratios or anything else, there is plenty of information on that elsewhere, all I want to know is the answer to my question above.

Thanks,
Andrew

Well, I've finally gotten around to getting under the car and looking at the problem.

The CSB seems to be completely intact (no torn rubber). What is "excessive" movement with regards to the driveshaft and the CSB?

On another note, it looks like there is a slight leak of differential fluid where the input shaft goes into the diff. It hasn't leaked enough to hit the floor, but it is wet and has a single drop.

Any ideas?

Is this type of thing indicative of a center support bearing failing?

I have a noise under load, at speed.
I have a noise with no load, low speed (and presumably high speed)

First:
I first noticed the under load, at speed sound driving ~40-50 in 3rd and 4th gears. I would press the accelerator and it would make a humming sound. It got progressively worse and felt almost as if there was power loss when it was happenning.

THEN:
I went shopping yesterday. When leaving, I was going to backup out of a parking space. As I was releasing the clutch, it felt as if I had left the parking brake on (but I didn't). Then, it made a 'clunk' sound and started moving. I shifted into 1st and it did a similar thing (with another 'clunk'). As I started driving, I could hear a regular, softer 'clunk' sound at low speed driving out of the parking lot.

Now: I have the rear end in the air, it in neutral and I spin the driveshaft manually. It sounds like there is a bit of a 'clank' where I believe the center support bearing is. Occasionally the driveshaft seems to lock-up and requires more force than usual to restart the rotation.

Which is it? What's wrong? I checked my guibo and that seems fine (and wouldn't explain many of problems).

Thanks,
Andrew

I had to grind my socket down to allow it to fit, although mine was from Snap-On.

I had a similar noise and it turned out to be a sticking front brake caliper. I bought two rebuild kits and replaced the guide bolts on both sides. No more sticking caliper, no more noise! I let mine go a little bit too long and ended up with a slightly warped disc.

Lift your car and spin the wheels...you should be able to feel if its a wheel bearing or just sticking brakes --- a wheel bearing will make the wheel spin roughly, a brake problem will only make it difficult to spin the wheel (and add some noise, likely).

Engine + Driveline / ECU / Car won't start after engine swap

Yeah, I had the same problem right after my swap. Took a bit to figure out that I had mis-wired from the coils.

As for coolant capacity...after being completely empty (I just swapped motors), mine took just over 2gallons to be completely full.

General Topics / Girling Caliper Rebuild Instructions?
« on: June 06, 2007, 11:01:03 AM »
Hey,

I just bought a caliper rebuild kit from BavAuto...before I realized that you can get a rebuilt caliper for ~40+core elsewhere. Anyway, are there any writeups on how to do this? Its basically just replacing the guidebolts and regreasing them --- is there anything else I should know?

Site and club discussion / can we get a gallery?
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:55:48 PM »
Another option is to use http://gallery.menalto.com/. I have one setup on my web server as a point for photo sharing amongst friends. I'd be happy to help out if it turned out to be a decent option.

There is integration with vbulletin (listed on http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Integration:Available_Integrations).

Here is a link that showcases its integration with vbulletin: http://www.racersden.net/forum/gallery.php

Could setup a store on cafepress.com...then we could all buy the m42club pillows for our back seats ;)

There weren't any discernable overheat issues, but that is assuming the temp gauge is and has been working properly.

I'm going to buy a new engine this week -- 66,000 miles on a 1993 m42 for not too much over what I've been quoted for a head rebuild, not bad!

Now, I've heard that a digital manual has been posted to this forum...is that so? I've lost my bently and will probably need some manual-based assistance pulling the old block and putting it all back together.

Any pointers from you experienced guys out there?
