Hi there, I can't agree with the above. To dismount the roof, open it about 10-15cm backwards, then pull the inside masking upholstery pulling it's front edge down, there are some bolts which will just release the masking upholstery. Once this is done, pull the whole fabric with a steel frame inside the roof, to back of the car. And... close the roof. You will get the access to the 6 as I remember bolts which were discusssed higher.

All I can say is that You should tilt after the masking is removed backwards.
You are unable to remove the part completely without dismounting the whole roof.

The information may be not really precise as I was dismounting it 3-4 years ago, but it should give You the right idea. In case of any problems, I will check it to give You right answers.

Yes my friend, the roof is tricky. Anyway You should dismount and mount in warm place to avoid plastics damage.

Exterior / back again
« on: February 11, 2010, 03:23:57 PM »
Hi all, I'm back again. Older, better wiser! But I've lost all my photos ;) I mean that I've had them erased from the server, so it will take a while till they are all back (Yes, I'll do it :-) )

Anyway, I'll answer fiftytakedowns. My spoiler was in quite bad shape, so I've replaced it. But the new one was silver, so I've sanded it with the fine 3m 3d mesh( cloth or whatever You wil name it I mean this blue/violet something sold in painters shops :-) ), I can't actualy remember if it was broken or not, but You can't fix the spoiler with a regular putty. You may wish to use special "bumper putty" which is elastic enough to be placed on ABS, plastics or even hard rubber. But the trick is when starting to adhesing anything to plastics or rubbers. It is absolutely a must to use special plastisc adhesive before even putting a putty on it. Otherwise it will simply fall apart.

The BMW e30 spoiler has to have it's inside steel parts completely free of rust as You are unable to derust them. They are put into a rubber!

:-)

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Tranny Upgrade Options ?

You can take gearbox from diesel one guy told me that gears in it are wider and stronger.

Go getrag 225 - M3:-) as I did... You need m20 tranny, and You have to reweld the housing, shorten Your driveshaft and put it in Your car ;) It is not a black magic but is quite hard to achieve...

Surely it was a great ride... Hopefully we will make it one more time...

BTW: Buddys! The car project will be reanimated in few weeks ;)

i dont have a limit to my budget but i just want to increase the power in a sensible fashion without making drastic changes to the internals.

The most sensible fashion I know is the Metric Mechanic unit... Especially if You are not real tuner itself. It is the most complex and proven way of increasing power to M42.

W/O drastic changes to the internals -> You can put there chip allowing higher revs /7000rpm/ -> and this causes +13 up to +17Hp's /depending on the gasoline type it is designed for/ Put there cone filter +5Hp's and lighten Your flywheel. This is the most sensible way of getting some Hp's to the engine. Changing the exhaust will change the sound, will maybe give it a little more flow at the end, but You will lose in the midrange.

So w/o rebuilding the unit, You can achieve more agressive /due to light flywheel/ and stronger /about 20-25Hp's/ unit. Changing the cams won't do any magic-> and surely without changing compression ratio, head flow, and lightening inside parts it is simply not calculating.

You can change the transmission to short one /for example 5spd getrag 225/ with 5th 1:1 but this will cause lower maximum speed, and You can surely change Your differential -for example to 4.45 unit. This will again shorten Your max speed but will transmit more wheel torque at lower speeds. But that's all.

For serious powergains go MM engine, for easier but less driveable -> go supercharged and for the most efficient improvement go TURBO! And Take the advantage of having 400+Hp's under the hood ;)

Of corse every one of theese engines appear differently, the most streetable option is N/A engine than a supercharged , but due to the LAG turbocharging the engine is not always liked by drivers. But it surely gives the most powerful unit.

My aid -> unless You strongly feel the engines by Yourself - keep it simple ;-)

Engine + Driveline / How to loosen crank bolt with engine on a stand?
« on: February 28, 2008, 11:14:02 AM »
Some time ago I had the same problem and it became obvious, that even 3 person holding the flywheel were not able to hold it.... So we've pulled the oil pan and with long wooden plank, we've blocked the crank.

2 persons were standing on the engine block and two other were pulling the key with 1,5 meter lenghtened arm. And finally we've forced the crank bolt to lose...

But I think, that impact gun would do the same... ;)

Finally the car is going to be red. Red as hell and only red. No flat black at all, no black roof....

You know - wifes...

But:

Today I can clearly see why they do not use furniture paints to paint the car. It is of corse possible, but it would be much easier to paint the car with the car paints. And of corse nearly three times more expencive - thats really why I am using furniture paints...

Much, much easier...

Somewhere I've seen a web page of US guy who has painted his car with nitro paint and with the roller used normally to paint walls in houses!!!! He has done his best to the car, and finally it was unexpectably outstanding with very very deep color, but he had to paint the car 12 times...

I will have to paint my car once more red, and three times clearcoat it. And it will still be half the price of car paints, but I will have to spend hours on polishing it. But after all it will be superior quality as far as I can see after today painting ;)

So - You who are planning to make all theese things listed in this post to Your car, remember, that it is good if afterall the car has the right shape ;)

The shape:

So, yesterday things finally looked this way:

And just before two hours the car was nicely looking flat black...

After some days of hard working - it is now -> the success!!!

The car is beeing done after long, long time spent just there in the corner.

Already done:

Flipped, derusted and rust-protected :

Engine chamber nicely painted this gray-like color which I actually like very much for that purpose:

Today I was playing with the sanding machine and some polyester putty to make all shapes e30-like ;)

the white one was a 318 with an automatique transmission.

I think You are not talking about the white with the orange arrow on the side....

Everybody sometimes crashes...

But right, Mark used to drive s14 powered car :-)

Engine management / Help!!!
« on: January 31, 2008, 04:03:45 PM »
The steering - You'd better fix this thing soon... But I think that You will have to change for the new rack. It is much better to change the rack for the new one than get crashed because You couldn't turn left or right.

500RPM's? Leak or bad air engine /this small in the back of the engine/.
