Engine + Driveline / M44 tensioner

I used a big set of slip-joint (channel lock) pliers to squeeze my M42 one back together.  Maybe a bench vice?  There should be a snap ring on the inner section that presses back in and snaps back into the original position.

I see I had a feeling that was the way to get it back into place just wanted to make sure before hand. I think there is actually a picture in the service manual that shows a m42 tensioner being pressed. Thanks

Engine + Driveline / Head Gasket Kits?
« on: January 11, 2012, 02:55:08 PM »
Go to PelicanParts.com and buy the parts there, Thats what I did and it came out to a reasonable price with new water pump, HG kit, and T-stat.
In the HG kit it included all the gasket needed to change except the little gaskets that go on the injectors. The brand they use is Victor Reinz.

I got my head rebuilt because once it was pressure tested they found a crack in the head so I would say atleast get it pressure tested. Might aswell get it tested now rather than finding out later that there is something wrong with the head. because the slightest overheat can fracture the head.

Engine + Driveline / M44 tensioner
« on: January 11, 2012, 02:46:33 PM »
Hey guys I've been working on putting a new Head Gasket on my M42. I wanted to update the tensioner since I noticed alot of positive comments on the M44 tensioner compared to the M42. I was installing the tensioner(M44) first I test fit and made sure it was all good, I forgot to oil it a bit so I took it off. When the Tensioner was out right after out of nowhere the top part of the tensioner just popped off.. Does anyone now how I can get it reassembled? or am I going to need to buy a new one?

I have all the pieces, just need to figure out what is caused it to pop off like that and a way to put it back together, thanks.

My advice is to stick with the OEM studs simply for convenience. It will probably take just as long to chase your tail trying to find an M7 bolt of correct length and pitch as it would to just order them and be done with it.

If not in stock my dealer can usually get items shipped in the next day, however, he's 25 miles away:mad:.

Yeah ended up reusing the old ones just took them off and cleaned them up a bit rethread them and worked fine I hope still havent fired her up

Any ever use bolts instead of using those studs? I wonder what the size would be. I'm asking because its the last thing I need in order to finish my project and I don't think the dealer has any near by. The wait is like 3-4 business days :(

Thanks alot, I think I have an idea of the type of inserts you're talking about, I've seen a video on youtube of some guy doing it to his Dirt Bike. I'm going to look into it this weekend hopefully the NFL playoff's don't work up my whole weekend to get some free time to work on the car. :D

are you still wrestling with this?   broken bolts are a bitch..  sometimes an insert is better than just a rethread, especially in aluminum.  cast iron takes a rethread a little better, if you have to.

Yeah still looking into it since I havent had time to get much done lately, what type of inserts were you talking about?
I will actually have to rethread the cylinder block since its one the bolts that hold the water pump.

Anyone know where I can get a good tap tool? One of the bolts on the water pump snapped and my dad FAILED in trying to get it out. So now I need to rethread the hole and fit a bigger size bolt in there. what would be a bigger bolt size that would work on there I believe the size right now is M6x20

If the head is off of the block you do not want to have it sitting on a flat table where the valves can make contact with the table top surface and bear the weight of the head (Possible bent valve stems end results). Place wood blocks( Hokey pucks) under the head to support it in an elevated position in relation to the table top surface.

Thanks for the advice didn't know that, good thing I put some wood to keep it at an angle.
