Suspension / upper strut bearing installation

Use an air gun to release the nuts before you jack up the car. There is a high chance the damper will spin, but it shouldn't be an issue.

Engine + Driveline / Cold start lifter tick - info request
« on: December 18, 2007, 07:24:44 AM »
I don't think it is a problem - it not unusual to have a tick for a while after cold startup. The thinner the viscosity oil you use, the easier the tappets drain down over night too!

Engine + Driveline / Crankshaft Pulley Bolt
« on: December 18, 2007, 07:22:01 AM »
I've never heard of anyone changing it, but it is not a bad idea. Flywheels bolts is a no brainer, but I honestly don't know why there is such high torque on the pulley bolt.

Engine + Driveline / Changing the rear diff

I've got a 3.91 in mine. Seems to be just as quick as the 4.10, but about 300 less RPM at highway speeds. I don't think I would go with any other gear though, unless most of your travels are on the highway.

When you mean smaller, do you mean short or longer? Unless you have a specific reason to change, then leave it alone. Only active recommendation would be to fit a LSD.

Spend the money on the driver. You will get the greatest value from this.

Suspension / Tire Size Recommendation: Advice Sought

Also:  Any advice as to whether it's a BAD idea to run track tires on the street.  Note that I am not worried about rapid tire wear and the car will not be driven in the rain so wet condition driving is not a concern of mine.  My main concern is around whether the steering will hunt excessibly while going down the road, loss of comfort, noise, etc.  thanks for input/advice

Don't do it. They need a lot of heat to start working properly.

Suspension / Best suspension set-up for the iS?

KW springs have a good reputation. Dampers less so, would recommend Bilstein first and Koni second for general driving.

Engine + Driveline / Familiar symtoms?

Also check for vacuum leaks from the rubber air intake bellows and all the hoses around the inlet manifold.

Could be damper mounts too.

General Topics / How rare are '90 318is'? Difference b/w '90/'91?
« on: August 21, 2007, 04:39:20 AM »
It debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989 but was overshadowed by the launch of the 850i. Eventually, it was sold in most markets but was most popular in Italy, Spain, Portugal, UK, Ireland and North America. Even so, the 318is is a relatively rare car with 41,234 being made (out of a total of 2.2 million E30's = 1.86%). 9,442 were made in 1990, 29,171 in 1991 and 2,621 in 1992.

Sorry to hear about this. I was in the same situation about 7 years ago. If you can get the car independantly valued (local BMWCCA Chapter?) it will help. Fight like hell and emphasise that you car is NOT stock and is NOT worth book value.

Engine + Driveline / Transmission ?
« on: August 21, 2007, 04:30:19 AM »
Sounds like synchro's, dogs or a bent selector rod. Did it get worse after the short shift kit was installed?

Could also be a dragging clutch - try to changes gears with the engine off to see if it improves.

Engine + Driveline / Oil in intake
« on: August 21, 2007, 04:28:54 AM »
This is normal as the crankcase is directly venting into the inlet bellows. It increases as the engine wears.
