For Sale / FS: M42 Engine and Transmission
« on: November 02, 2011, 10:24:48 PM »
Just got back from SEMA in Vegas. Cant find my pictures on my computer. Gotta go take some new ones (wont be untill the weekend).

As far as service records: I have a huge stack of parts receipts that will go with the motor.

The following have been replaced within 15K:
Spark plugs (NGK)
ALL the seals (EVERYTHING from coolant o-rings to the rear main)
Oil pump
Timing Chain
Chain tensioner
Chain Guides
Water pump, and t-stat
ALL coolant hoses, heater hoses and plastic junction parts
#4 injector (and all injector o-rings)
Clutch (everything replaced, flywheel machined)
Fan and fan clutch (broke the fan when pulling the motor)

That is all i can think of without spending hours digging deeper into the receipts.

Compression results are 180+ psi on ALL cylinders
Hyla-coiled half a dozen of the valve cover bolt holes so they are ALL good

was planning on keeping this car for the long term until i totaled it in 2008, then i was going to keep the guts of the E30 for a 2002tii project. Now the wife has a E46 and im driving a Smart car.

Please PM with any questions, and the pictures ARE COMING SOON! i swear...thank you for your patience.

if i bring a truck, do you have a cherry picker or something to get everything loaded in the bed? i am building an M42 right now and, depending on how it feels in a couple weeks, i will probably want to pick up another one for my other car.

Cherry picker = 3 strong guys (my brothers and i lifted the whole thing from the back of a pickup to its current location). If you want to meet halfway let me know.

I see you have a possible sale, not to be in bad form I as a new member if the buyer backs off the sale keep me in mind. I am in Sacramento.
916-640-6003 james. Just picked up a 91 318is that has a rough idle and
over heats. may just need a head rebuild. :)

Let me know. I can deliver.

My car engine just crapped out on me as of last night.  I suspect a broken chain which means total re-build.  PM me if you are interested in meeting me north of where you are.  Thanks!

How far North? PM sent.

All the guides were replaced, the sprockets were fine (changed the chain and tension-er as preventative maintenance). No leaks. I will post more in depth service records when i get back from vacation...and pics!

I forgot to add: located in Sacramento, CA and the alternator and most accessories are included like the wiring harness, radiator and most coolant hoses (which all have less than 10k on them).

Thanks, Christoph

Ok so as the title says i got a motor from a '91 E30 318is for sale. Motor is in great condition 134k on it, all receipts for work done to it while i owned it. Re-sealed everything about 10k before i pulled it out of the car. New timing chain, tensioner about 1k before puling it out of the car. I pulled the motor and transmission out in 2008 after my car was totaled (no frontal damage). I sealed it up and it has been sitting in my parents barn ever since. Comes with lots of misc parts. Transmission has bad 2nd syncro. New clutch (not willing to sell transmission separately, must got with motor).

Pictures to come soon.

Asking $550 for everything, will ship to the greater Sacramento, CA area. Or you can come get it (located in 95722) for $500.

Thanks!

Engine + Driveline / Did the early M10 318's have LSD's?

it was an option....just like it was an option for the late model e30 318's.

Yes. It specifies it in the owner's manual. Should also be a lot on this at 318ti.org.

it says "premium unleaded", in the manual (it must be dumbed down for americans, cause most of us here dont know the difference between 87 and 91.....just premium, plus and unleaded ). I just told my fiance to put 91 octane in it.

Hey guys, getting ready for another New England winter and i need to buy some snow tires within the next two weeks.  What do you guys use.  My dad suggested either Bridgestone Blizzaks or Hakkapelitas (spelling??).  What do you guys use in the winter because Kuhmo Exsta SPT's are not good in deep snow!!

blizzaks are awsome!

i got the car because i do not have the time or facility to do repairs on my fiance old DD. So no 5spd swap or dasc . Also, she has a heavy foot so im sure gas milage will be on the down side, are you sure about the 89 octane for the M44, i have been putting 91 in it ($2 more a fillup if that ;)).

i didnt check the MPG's yet. im assuming it will get better millage than my '91 318is even though its an automatic. the california roof is awsome! and so are the folding rear seats! the best part is the dash. i think the TI's had the best configuration out of ANY bmw. its E30 styling with a modern twist, a whole lot better than conventional 318's (it actually the main reason we bought a Ti instead of a normal E36). all in all it a fun car.

 (no E30 though).

it almost has 50/50 like the E30, and it has identical front suspension, and the whole rear subfrafe is the same as the E30's (thats why they where cheaper than the regular e36 318i's). Diffrential looks a bit different.

so there is a new 318 in the family! My fiance now officially has a BMW! We picked up a red/copper 318ti (with the california roof) for $4000 yesterday in San Jose california. It has an extremely clean interior and exterior. Motor is missing the a/c compresor. and it ran fine all the way home but the check engine light is on now :(. pretty sure its something minor....not to mention i have a spare M42 laying around with all the extra parts ;). So anyways, now we both have 318's, pretty excited.

Here are some pics she took, i will get some better ones up once i clean her up a bit. Also, after searching for a 5spd for some time we got unlucky and had to settle with an automatic , my fiance prefers a 5 spd but oh well, thats the only drawback....

.....Opinions?

so the guy put in a center support, even though it needs a driveline and a flex disc. He thinks im some kind of moron that doesnt know about these cars, he was trying to tell me it was the muffler hangars?! Anyways i offered him $4000 (very clean car just needs a driveline), hes not going to take anything under $5500. He told me most people dont "get on the throttle" in a test drive so they wont notice it (vibrates when you get on it and give it some torque). His latest theory is one of the motor mounts is shot (i inspected both of them and they are fine).

Looking at a '96 318ti on thursday, no sunroof though:( (fiance NEEDS a sunroof:rolleyes:). guy wants $4500, pretty sure i can talk him down to $3800 or so.

guess i should have put that in. Im in Nor-cal. edmunds.com: $3200, Nada.com Retail: $5500, couldnt find used car pricing.

When he calls today i dont think im going over $4500, people in the bay area suck, they thing their stuff is worth alot more than it actually is, look at the housing here. And what makes it worse is people actually pay the high price....retards. Screws it up for the rest of us who just want a decent car, for a decent price

So i have been looking some 318ti (1996-1998) latley for the fiance. Our subaru (her DD) broke and needs an engine rebuild, no funds right now so i am going to put her in a 318ti. My question is how much would one expect to pay. I have looked at 3 now, one was $8,000, one was $2,800 (POS), and the one i really like is $5,500. the last one is:

'97 138,000, extremely clean, motor, interior and exterior (alpine white, gray cloth interior). it blue books at $3,475. The guy wont go below $5,000. Is it worth it? He is putting in a center support right now (the driveline is probabally shot) because it made noise when i test drove it.

My question is: is it worth $5000? would anybody else pay that or is that a rip-off, they seem to be going for top dollar these days.
