Engine + Driveline / Which sensor send the temp to my Dash?
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:42:12 AM »
After changing my starter, and refreshing the "mess under the intake"  everything is running fine except my dashboard temperature gauge which is getting power but not showing any tmeperature.

So REAL OEM shows:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AJ93&mospid=47318&btnr=11_1505&hg=11&fg=15

Is part #6 the sensor that connects to the dash gauge?

There is no difference between this connector and the one that plugs in below the Oil filter. Is there any way to differentiate them?

I figure I have either plugged them into the wrong spot or my temp sensor is loose.   I wanted to check before I take off the intake (again!)

Thanks.

Engine + Driveline / Where does the FI vacum hose coneect
« on: February 07, 2009, 05:57:34 PM »
Thanks I took it apart again and found it.  For future reference disconnect the hose from the fuel injection pressure regulator and reinstall the throttle body with the hose attached.  It is much easier to connect to the pressure regulator than the downward facing throttle body nipple

I have replaced my starter and have everything back together after removing the intake manifold,  except part #11 on this real oem diagram:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AJ93&mospid=47318&btnr=13_0308&hg=13&fg=15.

Does it plug into the bottom of the throttle body?

Thanks

Engine + Driveline / Engine rattle & leak
« on: February 03, 2009, 10:28:32 PM »
There are a lot of posts on this site about replacing timing chains.  Brendan Purcell's site has an excellent DIY.  Pelican parts has all the parts you'll need.  You really need to address this issue though before you start driving the car.  The $500 - $750 you spend now will be a whole lot cheaper than replacing the engine if the chain breaks. Its a great car and a great engine.  I have been delighted with my engine since I refreshed the chain and the related sprockets. Use Real OEM to get the part numbers and see how it fits together.

Good Luck. Its a larger but straightforward job. Just a few obstacles, fan nut and crank nut to overcome :)

Change the metal gasket if it has been over tightened. It also leaks if its not there.

A simpler set up is 3-4 ft 1/2 inch threaded rod 2 washers, 2 nuts and an impact socket.

Thread the rod through one bushing from the outside (say left bushing) Then put on a washer and a nut.  Then another nut and a washer then the impact socket. thread teh rod through the right bushing. Wrench the nuts away from each other till you have braced against the left bushing and brought the impact socket to the right bushing.  The impact socket needs to be the right size but you keep wrenching the nuts apart and the impact socket moves into the bushing housing and pushes the bushing out.  Use Dawn as luibrcant.  If its sounds complicated its not and if you are not a virgin you'll figure it out.:)

Suspension / 1991 318is shocks and springs?

Springs and shocks are not the same although they are interchangeable.  The different springs listed in Real OEM for example have different spring rates.

The 318 M42 has a lighter engine so you will get different drops compared to a 325 for the same springs

Search is your freind here. There are many posts on suspension setups and may part numbers specific for the M42 318.  The tried and true set up is Bilstien Sport with H&R Sport springs

Suspension / Need help dropping rear subframe
« on: September 08, 2008, 07:46:11 AM »
I used an air hammer/chisel and chipped out the remaining metal after cutting off the bushings.  Once I got to this stage it was pretty straight forward except for the abject fear that I would damage the the frame. I went slow and it came out all right.  After cutting the bushing off the clean up (chip out) was only 10-15 minutes.

It' s a tough question because you don't know what you have until its open.  I replaced everything on mine, but the rails could have been left with the exception of the bottom one which fell apart in my hands. The only sprocket that could have been left in was the one with the bearing.

In the end I found it was just easier to replace everything.

Poor choice of words on my part - I meant look including the suspension and lowering, and worth meaning you won't gat the cost back in added value. You are right about "look" cost but look without the suspension = poser.

Maybe you could ship me those $40 seats:D

You can keep the IS emblem though.;)

I don't think he was arguing  ... and I'm not either :)

There is a seasonality to things, including level of interest and amount of time.  I hardly go to the MINI sites anymore even though I still drive my MINI every day because it doesn't need any work!  When I am working on the E30 this is the site I use and Bimmerclassics for a little more Canadian content.

I too like this forum and thinks its the best.  rev 3  I only stumble across when I am searching technical items or DIYs

+1 on rare.  I looked for 16 months before finding one 300 miles away. Went to look at it and passed, then stumbled stumbled across another one a couple of days later that was much better.

If you want the IS look with 4 doors it is going to cost you more than the car is worth so make sure you will keep it a while.  The return comes from use rather than resale.

Suspension / Suspension critique? Billy sport, vogtland, cabby sway?

Alignment cost me $100 - not much to be sure of what you have but too much given the minimal adjustments they can make.

You need to realize that we are talking amount very fine measurements having a pretty big impact, so for $100 or less its worth it in my opinion.

Man you already have the best colour  - Brilliantrot

Well except for maybe white or blue or black

Seriously- one of the reasons you see so many red ones is because as a small car red picks up the size and shape.  The only downside is you do need to keep it waxed and wax it more often than some other colours - ok - ALL other colours.
