Engine + Driveline / Re: E36 M42 and E30 M42... possibilities?

I don't think the e36 injectors work in the e30 mani. Or you can break the plastic sleeve off but it's  been a few years since I looked at it. I've run 2years with the disa gone and nothing plugged in. It sets a code but not a check eng light. Personally, I'd run all e36 stuff but with an e30 manifold.

The crossmember and mounts are are stock e30 units. In their genius, BMW  made the mounting studs for the crossmember slide in the body so they just slide back an inch or so. The only thing I welded was when I put the shift rod back together.

I used the stock e30 guibo. It bolted right up. The 250 I used was from a 4-cyl car if that matters.

I have finally completed my driveline upgrade to go along with my M44 Frankenmotor. If you HATE the huge gap from first to second gear on the 240's, I highly recommend this swap. I will outline a few things needed to do it.
You need the cut the shift rod and shorten it. The way I did it was to cut it too short, run an 12x1.5 tap into each end and then screwed all thread in. This allowed me to test-fit it few times and after  I adjusted to the correct length I then welded it together.

The e30 alum shift base works perfectly.

I loosened the driveshaft nut and slid it all the way together, moved the center support all the way back and has a few mm of play overall in the driveshaft length. It works but just barely, and I have no noises or vibrations after 3 months or so (3k mi)

You have to use the g250 slave cyl.

With a 3.25 out back, it feels like it has the perfect ratios to me. Granted my eng has more torque than a standard m42.
Hope this helps anyone considering an e36 m42 or m44 swap. Just use the gearbox too!  You will love the close-ratio, I promise. You can test drive mine if your in the Sacramento area to try it out.

Put a getrag 250 in it and it will be perfect for a boosted m42.

The deck height is lower on an M44 piston. You will not be able to use them with an M42 crank since it will drastically lower the compression ratio.

Well a lot has happened since my last post. I've installed 24lb Volvo injectors since no matter how much 'fuel' I added above 4K it still seemed to need more- granted this was butt-dyno since I have no afr's. The 24 lb injectors run perfectly and I can make them too rich up top if I wanted to. Mission accomplished. I've since put a stock late M42 cam back in and passed CA smog. Apparently he didn't noticed the difference between and MAF and AFM.
I'm really liking the stock cam. Prob going to leave it in since, as a daily, torque is king. I do want an early cam tho. Should be a good compromise.
On a separate note: a buddy with a cammed 2.7i stroker m20 drove my car and felt that it is every bit as strong as his car, at least from 4K up. Both cars with a 3.73 axle. It just confirmed that it was all worth it.
After reading up on ethanol blends, I started adding 3 gal of e85 to every tank of 91 octane CA shit gas. It works out to around 94 octane and my engine loves it. If you have high compression or boost, give it a try, since it appears to not affect the mixture at all. I found no noticeable fuel trim change before and after.

I must be getting old, I popped a stock cam in to smog my car and I like the torque better than wringing it out to 7k. So I'm selling my Delta intake cam. I'm looking for $100 shipped to lower 48.  It has fewe than 20k miles on the regrind. I'm very interested in a partial trade for a stock early 90-91 only M42 intake cam. Be forewarned, it has a terrible idle quality but hits hard at 4,500 to 7k. Should be a lot of fun for someone.
