Engine + Driveline / Warm Starting Issue
« on: April 12, 2012, 06:24:42 PM »
ok, ran the test......

- Stomp Test:  I got 1444.  So no codes.
- Coolant Temp Sensor (hot) I got 260 ohms
- Intake Air Sensor (hot) I got 1850 ohms

I didn't test any of the sensor cold (like in the morning) since my problem really isn't a cold start, it's a hot start.

So the one that stands out is the IAS..... correct?

Let me make sure I did this correctly.  The car had just returned from a 30 minute drive so it was good and hot.  I did the ohms test with the car turned off, correct?  For the IAS I twisted the connector off of the AFM and touched the pins with my meter, correct?

So I'm guessing your gonna say I should start by replacing the IAS.  However, can you replace just the IAS on the M42???  I can't find that part alone???  Please don't tell me it requires replacing the entire AFM?

As always, thanks so much for the help!!!!

PS:  Geoff - I did do some research on the leaky fuel injectors.  That is a good suggestion, however everything I found said that usually results in a "cold-start" problem, as the injectors tend to leak as the car sits for a while and then gets cold (like say overnight).  As you said, the cylinders have too much gas in them and it then takes more "cranks" to get it started.  But again, when cold.

Great.  I will do the testing and let you know what I find.

Thanks.

Engine + Driveline / Warm Starting Issue
« on: April 10, 2012, 04:08:44 PM »
First let me say, I did do a lot of searching, but the issues or results were not exactly what my issue is.

So with that said, here is my Warm Start Issue:  When the car|engine is cold (summer or winter) say the first start of the day.  It cranks and then turns over right away (I would say within 2 seconds).

However, once the car has been driven for a while and reaches operating temperature, then turn it off.  When you go back out to start it again (say within 10-15 minutes) it takes almost 5-7 seconds of cranking until it turns over.

Once it does turn over there are no other issues (such as hesitation or rough idle).  It doesn't struggle to crank (new battery solid starter).

So the problem is strictly when it's hot it just takes much longer to turn over?

I have done a thorough tune up:

- Plugs
- Wires
- Fuel Filter
- Air Cleaner
- All fluids

Thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Mark

Engine + Driveline / HELP.... Cant get the alternator out?
« on: February 18, 2012, 09:02:19 AM »
trying to remove the alt.  Have wires disconnected and all "mounting" bolts removed.  Something is holding it up at the bottom mounting location?  Bushing of some sort that needs to come out?

Great.  One more question,  anyone know the torque value for the housing to block bolts?

Engine + Driveline / Changing oil filter housing gasket - question
« on: February 14, 2012, 08:48:43 AM »
I'll be pulling the entire oil filter housing off.  Replacing the Gasket, O-Ring and the Oil Pressure Switch.

Does the oil really sit up that high that it needs to be drained?

Thanks!

Do I need to drain the oil from the car to do this? I think not but want to confirm.

Thanks

Engine + Driveline / Oil Leak
« on: February 02, 2012, 07:36:45 AM »
So my sons E30 has been leaving a large puddle of oil under it (about 8" dia overnight).  The engine has 190K on it.  The engine was a mess with oil so I figured I just start from the top and replace seals.  To date I have replaced the following:

- Valve cover gasket and rubber bolt grommets
- Upper and lower timing chain cover gaskets
- Crank seal
- Upper and lower oil pan seals (along with dipstick o-ring)

I was very thorough in my work, cleaning everything and torquing everything to spec (I've done this type of work before).  I am certain that my work is not leaking and the leak has greatly reduced, down to about a 1" dia overnight.

So the question is, what's next?  I thought perhaps the chain tensioner?  It has a slight "wet" look to it but it's not dripping wet.  The only other thing I can think off is the oil filter housing gasket?

If the gasket between the block and the chain case were bad what would leak, oil or coolant?

I'm so close........

Engine + Driveline / Engine Support

I am getting prepared to replace my upper and lower oil pan gaskets.   It appears I will need to raise and support the engine from above (see attached).  Is this something I can rent?  Any suggestions as to where I can obtain one?

Thanks.

Engine + Driveline / Temp Gauge reading Colder than normal?
« on: May 23, 2011, 05:23:49 PM »
So here's the deal.  Took a 200 mile trip.  During the entire trip, as I cruised at around 70mph the temp gauge read slightly colder than normal (needle was at about 10 o-clock).  When I would get stuck in some traffic and idle or drive about 10mph the temp gauge would go up to normal (needle at 12-noon).

I'm used to overheating issues, but this ones got me confussed?

Any suggestions?
