Odd indeed as it seemed like a nice car to me.

Just weld up those rear doors, swap in an S50, slap on an "is" badge, raise the price to 10k and it will be gone by lunch time!  ;)

I've driven this car, it's as solid a driver as you could want. GLWS!

WTB/WTT / WTB: E30 M42 Chip - MD
« on: April 30, 2013, 03:42:56 PM »
Looking for a Dinan, Conforti/Turner, or MarkD/EAT chip for an E30 M42.

Local is better (just outside of Baltimore), but shipping is okay. Either paypal or cash work for me!

PM or reply here, thanks!

Engine + Driveline / Camshaft timing question
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:56:18 PM »
You should just use the gear that has the pin on the exhaust cam and not bother swapping pins. Just for clarification, both gears should have pins, but the intake one is not really necessary.

As far as compression, shaving the head raises compression. Outside of a rebuild using different internals (which is the best way) a MLS gasket will work. What sort of internals are you running, or was the rebuild just stock + the 360 bearings you mentioned elsewhere?

Engine + Driveline / how to relieve fuel pressure

Surprised no one chimed in with a helpful tidbit. As for me I just yank the line. But I rather enjoy the smell of gasoline. Still, there must be another way.

For Sale / FS/FT: 1995 318ti Clubsport E36

I looked at the interior pictures, and for a moment wondered why you had an SVT Focus interior shot!

So the Clubsport is suspension, wheels, interior and added on exterior bits? Interesting, I certainly have not seen one. VGLWS for a different car.

1. For those who have driven both, are the extra 200 lbs in the front really that noticeable, and does it effect any of it's other characteristics?

2. Are replacement parts to be had? If so where? I can't seem to find them either...

3. I keep hearing the m42 is more reliable than the m20 can someone explain to me what's more reliable about it? (I do know about the valves ticking on the m20)

1. It's more like ~40 in the front (two extra cylinders), 20 in the middle (transmission, extra interior options), and maybe 10 in the rear (medium case diff). It does not really impact the performance, especially since there is ~30 extra HP on tap. But it really drives differently due to the differences in power band/torque and the way it revs.

2. Replacement parts are just as readily available as for any E30, at least online. I wouldn't trust (or pay more) for in stock auto store parts. As far as engine performance (especially internals) there is less to be had vs. the M20, but there is more than enough to choose from.

3. Much more reliable, maybe not on the street as there are so many variables, but certainly on the track. Our Chump Car has maybe 70 hours track time on a non rebuilt 100k+ mile engine and has not failed. I cannot say the same for the M20 cars which are forever breaking rocker arms and having distributor issues.

In summary, buy the M42 if you like the concept of a peppy, spirited and split personality (in a good way) (in the way it can poke around town or fly to redline) car, or buy the M20 if you want to be like everyone else and kneel down at the altar of power. Whatever you do, don't buy an M42 and M50 swap it, know in advance if you can live with 136 stock (~155-60 with basic mods) HP.

The reasonable fuel mileage does not hurt either.

I don't exactly see how the mounts could sag like that unless they were really past it, but I suppose it's possible. Try rockauto for the engine mounts, someone on here pointed out they were much less expensive, but they may not be so now as sales there come and go.

As for clearance, I suppose you could just add some shims between the plate and mount points to achieve greater clearance if the mounts don't solve it. As for shims I would suggest something like the M42 valve cover bolt donuts, they might be a perfect fit.

General Topics / Replacement/Performance Parts For m42?
« on: February 14, 2013, 05:40:27 PM »
Truth be told, the main difference between the M20 and M42 is the way they rev. Of course the M20 saddles you with a bit more weight, but also give a bit more power. Frankly, the M42 is just as competitive (and more reliable/efficient) as and M20 car, as our Chump Car has proven.

As for performance engine mods, outside of building the engine you can get a chip, a and some cams/matched injectors. Beyond that an exhaust is more for noise, as is an altered intake and a lighter flywheel really just changes the character of the engine more than giving it more power. My advice is to invest in some good suspension, good pads and more importantly some nice tires. Anything beyond that really takes money and much more importantly driver skill to add appreciable gains.

Failing coil driver would give you rich because in one cylinder fuel would not be burned.

Duh on my end saying lean running due to coil issues, you are quite correct that would cause rich running. I still think an examination of the plugs will yield the some useful information.

Or if your trailing arm bushings look at all suspect just pull the entire rear subframe and do the bearings, rebuild the axles if needed, new diff bushing, new RTABs, maybe some stainless lines (or just new rubber ones) and the subframe mounts. Or you know, just do both bearings, not just the one side.

What do your spark plugs look like? I am guessing at this point the car must be running lean, so maybe that means a failing coil driver, which means a new DME?

AFAIK all M42 and M44 radiators are the same, you will see the same at the junkyard if you find any. Good luck.
