Engine + Driveline / lol piss poor design
« on: April 01, 2011, 08:57:21 PM »
+ 1 on the piss poor bleeder

I found after breaking mine and not being able to get a another one (im in australia nuthin is easy to find for a bmw here)

I found a bolt almost the same size thread (slightly smaller) and right depth etc
used some gas sealing tape that u will find in any plumbing shop to bulk up the thread, screw in FINGERTIGHT , shouldn't leak (mine doesn't)
Thats it.....

Alternatively u could use a hex head grub screw style, it only has to cover the bleed hole underneath the cap to stop leaking. (looks prettier)

Worked for me, better than a shitty plastic bung that breaks way too easy for a "reusable" bleed screw.

may not work for everybody but i think its pretty simple.

Engine + Driveline / another (different?) hot start problem
« on: March 22, 2011, 11:33:12 PM »
Update: Sorted the issue, seemed to be idle air bypass(mixture at idle) screw was way out of adjustment due to originally being on an m40.
now it starts hot, cold or in the otherwise, no stutters, farts or hiccups, everytime.

Not saying that this is everybody's issue, but it worked for me.

You upgraded an e30 M42?  I thought about the serpentine belt & electric fan bits, but did you do something else fun like enable knock sensors with the e36 DME?

Nah Dave Ive put the whole engine loom etc onto the standard gearbox, with original m40 mounts, and moved stuff round a bit lol, exhaust had to be modified to fit as RHD e36 are much wider that e30s and the steering shaft didnt fit  (I'm in Australia) other thatn that its an e36 in an e30 body :)

Engine + Driveline / Idle Air Bypass?
« on: March 22, 2011, 04:20:12 PM »
Hey Guys,
Ive just fixed a similar problem myself by adjusting the air idle screw on the MAF, I'm using an e30 m40 MAF on an e36 m42 so for me it was kinda justified, found a fairly good "how to" on bimmerforums for MAF adjustment (i know its for m20/30 but the procedure is the same, and from what I can find so are the voltages)

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1339369

I had really bad starting when hot, unable to accelerate unless ur at WOT for the first 30 seconds or so on start up, then it would clear up and smell really rich of fuel.
now its clean smelling and no pops n farts in the exhaust while sitting at the traffic lights

I'm aware that this may not be ur problem, but it may be also.....

Just for my 2 cents

P.S. I'm no mechanic just an educated enthusiast.

i know im trying to revive an old thread but i have this exact same issue, have had for 12 months or so now.....really shitting me.
k Ive replaced and or had professionally cleaned...
F.P.R
injectors
one way valve on fuel pump (local euro mechanic advised that the one way valve in the pump tends to fail)
fuel pump
currently doing the cam chain tensioner as it rattles like a coffee grinder atm.
plugs, leads etc
checked the alternator in case of low charge.

After all this I am still at a loss as to what could be causing the issue.
its a converted e36 m42 into 90 e30 318i (originally m40) everything else is pretty much standard

M42 Reference / Engine failure / timing chain slipped
« on: March 10, 2011, 04:37:55 PM »
m42 still kickin at 220k kms, previous m40 lasted 400,000. then dropped 5l oil at 100kmh, smashed bearings and rods :( . made way for e36 m42 conversion, best upgrade ever.
