You're absolutely right on this, I had better look through my spares, and failing that - buy a new one!

I have a spare t-stat housing...let me know, $20 shipped

Engine + Driveline / Sluggish and died....help
« on: January 31, 2017, 10:28:13 PM »
Ok so back story, just finished a rebuild after years of sitting, she starts right up and begin to drive her home from the garage where I did the work...all new gaskets, and everything re-torqued to Bentley spec...driving home I start to lose power and feels sluggish or like its choking a little bit, moves but no power, so then I put it in neutral and coast to traffic at a stoplight and she dies, wont start for about 20 minutes, drain battery then get a jump, starts and dies again, thinking about maybe the cat is clogged from coolant (previously blown hg) I loosen the 4 nuts on header bottom and create a leak, clears the CEL and runs ok until I get home...once at home I pull spark plug wires and a small amount of oil comes out with the boot on #2 cylinder...she smokes but she got home under her own power...any ideas as to where to start? Thanks in advance for any help.

Off-topic discussion / Re: Is M42B18 same in E30 and E36?
« on: January 31, 2017, 10:22:39 PM »
They are not 100% the same....Just did this swap, timing case is different, oil pan is different and the e36 oil lower oil pan will not clear the e30 steering rack, intake manifold is different (it has DISA, e30 does not, so e30 ECU does not), and CPS placement is a little different. Overall very easily swappable just take a few things from you e30 M42 and move them over and you should be good to go!

Ok people, so I have done 2 M42 swaps now and have amassed a number of parts for these motors, some e30 and some e36, (early and late model respectively), I am going to list them below but ask and I may have something that you would need. All parts are in good shape and just could use a little cleaning. Thanks for looking.

E30 (early model M42)
-Upper intake manifold - I have 2 of them one both would need a good cleaning but very functional and would look nice with a powder coating.($50)
-Lower intake manifold (intake plenum) (good shape but could use a good cleaning)($50)
-Fuel rail with OEM Injectors and Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR)($60)
-Power steering pump with two lower hoses, bolts and pulley (good shape but needs cleaning)($50)
-AC compressor with pulley (functional but needs cleaning)($60)
-Motor mount arm (exhaust side only)($25)
-(2) Timing covers upper (thermostat surround)($20 each)
-Thermostat housing (needs a little cleaning but overall great shape)($15)
-Crank bolt and pulley($10)
-(2) Crank side main seals (brand new)($10 each)

E36 (late model M42)
-All timing plastic rails/pieces with hardware with exception of the bottom rail and no chain($100 for all)
-Cams with good cam gears(no pointed teeth on gears)($100)
-Oil Pan with windage and pickup tube ***(NOTE: this is for the motor but will not work for an E30 swap as it will hit the steering rack)***($50)

All items are obo and buyer pays shipping...

Paypal gifts are awesome, PM for details

Willing to ship or meet up, but shipping would be probably easier given my work schedule..

UPDATE FIXED...

So perhaps installed a little off or something but the throwout bearing was a little "loose" and off of the spline, so re greased everything and back together and for the first time in 6 years, she's back on the road!!

E30 = Love

UPDATE

I reverted back to using the block that I just pulled and swapped all new gaskets and a few new timing pieces, took my time, did it correctly with proper torque and methods and used all resources available. She purrs like a kitten with a slightly high idle (around 1000-1200) but that's for another day to tackle. Now to get it back on the road and happy for a DD option.

Dave,

Thanks for the reply, I need to check all of these, it feels in my guy more mechanical than hydraulic. However, I hope like hell its as simple as replacing the MC and SC and it getting fixed. Everything inside of the housing while it was off was touched, either replaced or cleaned and greased and put back in with proper torque and best practices applied. I'll report back but any other ideas are always appreciated.

So did an m42 swap into my 91 318i, new clutch while.we were at it and then when we started it up and attempted to drive it up the street, I had no clutch pressure and was burning clutch along with some very metallic sounds from under the car...any ideas on what to look for?

UPDATE***

The late (e36) M42 block that i bought locally has some issues...notably no timing chain, broken timing guides, worn teeth on lower timing gears and timing gears mount was snapped off (requires a "new" (late M42, not early or swappable) timing case?? Also the added luxury of a certain valve tap on the 2 and 3 pistons...any thoughts here? Should I continue with a refresh of this motor or just start from scratch or rebuild my existing block and known good head (all e30)...thanks guys

Engine + Driveline / Can I put an e36 M42 into my e30 318i???
« on: December 12, 2016, 11:09:42 PM »
Sorry guys to ask a potentially old question, but I'm in a rush to buy a block from a guy selling on CL. My e30 is a 91 318i with a good head, potentially cracked block that steams from tailpipe at idle. The potential purchase is a 1994 318i (http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/pts/5910241118.html) M42 with a partial harness, but still OBD-I. My thought is that I should be able to put this into my e30, with minimal issues, correct? Anyone have any reason why I shouldn't go for this motor? TIA for any and all opinions.

Update....so with the new wires in proper firing order, same result....we used a little starter fluid to help things along and the hose from the back of the intake manifold that connects to the ICV blew off and the ICV made an interesting pop noise...any ideas?

Update...didnt mention it before but does anyone have a good pic of Mess under the Intake mod completed, just in case I messed up the hoses? TIA

Update! The M42 turned over!!! However, due to dead battery, throttle cable and multiple issues with the spark plug wires it will not hold a solid idle...also its keeps trying to blow out the ICV and the hose will not stay on that ICV...lastly there is milky/steamy looking residue on the oil cap, yet no coolant on spark plugs and lots of whiteish smoke and rusty colored liquid coming from the tail pipe. I'm assuming that most of this is due to the motor sitting for almost 3 years and its just burning off a lot of residue and build up, however, not sure about the oil cap since the head gasket is new and head was freshly cleaned...any ideas or advice for the idle, or liquid situations?? TIA

Desktop Dave anything man, you genius you!!
