Engine + Driveline / m42 head w a m44 block?
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:36:54 PM »
I have head, cams, lifters and complete valve train.

Still, sounds like I should just throw the car in the trash!  This is too much BS and $$ to get fixed!

Thanks for the answer though, I appreciate it.

Did you even verify with a pressure gauge it was losing fuel pressure?

Engine + Driveline / Anything we can do for mileage?
« on: February 16, 2011, 09:01:23 AM »
I am getting a 4 banger for the mileage.  I want to tweak the heck out of it for just that, mileage!  I will be working with the 94 M42 or 96 M44.  I know this is a M42 club, but I am sure you are all well versed with all the 4 bangers.

Going with the M42 twin cam engine as a base, what can I do, if anything, to make sure it gets max mileage?  Drop compression? MAP a lean burn into the computer, maybe with a APEX I ?

The obvious, keeping my foot out of it does not count as advice, thanks tho. :p

Engine + Driveline / Can lifters be mixed or they need to stay matched?

I know matching is better, but, I got a head that was already taken apart and in peices, sooo......

All I can say is holy crap dude!  I would have shot the car a loooooong time ago!  Nothing would satisfy me better than burning mashmallows on it on a cold night.  Cudos to you for hanging in!

If i wer you, I would just start at one thing at a time.  Seems like there are too many things to jump at.  I would rebuild (in my mind mostly) the WHOLE fuel system.  I would check it from azzhole to elbow.  Replace what does not look right.  Check everything fuel related, that includes EVAP parts.  After that move to the next thing.  Break down the electrical into section.  Sensors, grounds, DME, spark........  Go over each one meticulously, hot, cold, with cherry flavor, ice tea, whatever, pretend like your BMW testing grounds!  Throw the sensors in the oven and test, freezer over night and test etc.  I know your gonna cover a lot of same ground, but, check and document so you can move on and have a record.

It does sound like fuel or spark issues, duh, but, also recheck the basic condition of the engine, like compression and leakdown too.

One thing, and I may have missed it, is I did not hear anything about the TPS, MAP or MAF??

Engine + Driveline / m42 head w a m44 block?
« on: February 16, 2011, 08:04:36 AM »
So, I have a car whos vin says it has a M42 engine. I go to eblay and buy a M42 head. I pull the block to rebuild and I see a tag on it so something in my mind says to double check. Sure as F, its a 96 M44 block out of a vert, well, I have a coupe! So, since there was no head with the car to begin with, now what do I do? Do I buy a M44 timing set and throw that on the head? Are the head and cam's the same, just the gears diff? I know the gears are diff, but is that all I need to change it over? Anyone know of a M44/M42 guru.
