Engine + Driveline / Re: Another M42 engine build

You have to close out a thread like this with a dyno chart! Come on man :)

Ran it up to JakeB's and his dyno.  HP came in at 150.95 and Torque 139.46 at the wheels.  Car is running great and is a great driver. . . but that turbo is so enticing.  Here's a comparison to a stock M42:

I used metal no my m42 stroker build along with some Hylomar.  It's only been a little over a year but everything is still bone dry.

Maybe this will help.  The only reason I thought of it was when I got my block back from the machine shop they had put a freeze plug in the hole where the coolant pipe goes.

*image from realoem.com terrible drawings by me.

Are you sure the bigger hole isn't where the plastic coolant pipe goes?

recolored the picutre.  That purple and blue was a little hard to see.  Nelson_40 and/or Blue BMW (or someone else?) look to have made these images and they are the best diagrams!  Many thanks to them.

Sorry for the ancient bump but I believe the dark blue lines from the heater Core Inlet/Outlet are reversed.  The bottom should run to the head and the top should run to the plastic pipe as depicted in the first image below. This was from another thread, hope it helps.

Timing is pretty simple. if you follow a couple of rules: 1) front cam lobes pointing up and slightly towards each other and flats at rear lined up so a ruler can be placed flat across them kind of like this

2) There is an arrow on the oil filter housing

That needs to point to the tooth with this mark on the harmonic balancer

There should be 15 tiing chain pins between the timing gear marks.

If you do that you should be good to go.

I know I PM'd this but I thought I'd post up for others that come after.  Google E30 Factory Manual and you'll find links to download the BMW Factory Manual that will walk you through the lower timing case replacement.  The M42 section is pretty good.

You're correct, the "notorious" profile gasket is between timing case and head. The upper timing cover profile gasket,  is what needs to be compressed as in the illustration.  My point was i don't think that was done when they replaced my profile gasket in 1991.  Just wondering out loud if that lead to a bunch of leaky valve covers.  Sorry to add to the confusion.  As usual my thought process was as scrambled as my writing would make it seem.  :)

You need a crank holder.  You can borrow it if you want just pay for shipping there and back.  I've also got a lower timing case cover from when I switched mine from the idler wheel to idler guide.  PM me if you're interested.

If you're talking about the difference in height illustrated in this picture then it is not a design flaw but rather purposeful in order to compress the profile gasket.  The old crusty profile gasket won't compress so you may want to replace that if you haven't already.  When I tore mine apart it was not seated properly either.  My theory is when the profile gasket recall was done early in its life the techs didn't take the time to do it correctly which lead to valve cover sealing problems.
