Engine + Driveline / lots of problems solved
« on: February 17, 2011, 02:41:04 PM »
my valve cover, timing cover and crank seal leaked.  My engine sounded like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle.  I pulled it all apart and found the plastic liner on the long timing chain guide  flapping around.  I replaced all the seals and found that the chain had stretched a little bit.   The car does have 200k miles on it but the chain and sprockets looked good.  I put the locks on the cam shafts and pin in the crank.   Loosened up the intake sprocket and pulled the chain tight with the crank.  All my problems were solved by doing this and it no longer long cranks.  It starts on the first click and the motor runs like a brand new car.

What are your thoughts on replacing the exhaust manifold studs with grade 8 bolts.

Engine + Driveline / The seal
« on: October 15, 2010, 09:34:46 PM »
It is probably just the crank oil seal.  If it is just take of the pulleys and use a small pick to remove the seal.  You do not need to order one online.  You can get on at Motion Industries.   They have stores in most cities.   Their seals are also a better quality.

Engine + Driveline / 1 knock sensor
« on: October 06, 2010, 11:29:55 PM »
Does anyone have a picture or can describe where the knock sensor plugs in.  I just did a head gasket job on a 1995 motor and I left it unpluged.

Engine + Driveline / problem with ac bracket
« on: October 03, 2010, 11:48:23 AM »
my ac compressor and tension pulley does not line up with the pulley on the crank.  The crank stick out further then the compressor.  I just bought the car and the body is a 1992 but i dont know what year the engine is.  I think someone pieced this one together with whatever they could find.   From my research there are 2 of the brackets that mount it up but i need someone to measure how far theirs sticks out off the timing cover and tell me what engine year they have.

Engine + Driveline / m42 vs m44 problemt
« on: September 16, 2010, 06:55:37 PM »
I just bought a 1992 318i that had the engine changed out.  I think they used an m44 and set it up on odb I.  The exhaust manifold has shims welded to in and when I bought a new oil filter for it, it needed on listed for a 1996 or m44.  How can i be sure that it is a m44 and not a m42.  It also has a barn door style maf.  The intake has some vacuum ports not being used.  The reason i need to know is that i am doing a head gasket job on it.

How-To's / Remove the pulley
« on: September 16, 2010, 06:50:06 PM »
Unbolt the pulleys from the front and leave the main bolt alone.  Then hold the flange with a 24 inch channel lock and use a long breaker bar.
