Hey D.,
My son and I did the same thing today and came across the same anomaly you did with the cams being a bit off with the flywheel locked at TDC.  Did you ever get this resolved?  My plan is to rotate the cams so that the cam locking tool fits correctly and then replace timing chain, tensioner and guide rails.  Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah...have you had any luck troubleshooting the MAF?  Mine will also "skip" while I rev up the engine in neutral.

Just experienced acceleration issues in my '91 318is.  The car idles and runs fine except it feels as though the engine is stumbling when I accelerate.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Nice find dude...the car is going to be incredible!  I just bought one, not as good a deal though, and need some pointers.  It has 158K on it with an oil leak from the upper oil pan gasket.  Not sure if the timing chain was changed out.  The suspension is worn out and the steering wheel tends to rattle/jump when I hit a bump.  There is a minor rattle in the front end.  

I have experience working on cars but limited to small projects...never a complete rebuild.  I want to replace the front end and maybe an engine rebuild to gain more HP.  Do you or anyone reading this have any recommendations?  Manuals I could use?  Anything to get me started?  Thanks

My 1991 318is started showing the CEL after my son and I thoroughly cleaned the engine with 40 psi water and degreaser.  It will idle fine with the CEL lit, but dies after it is revved up and CEL goes out.  Anyone have experience with this or have any ideas where to start troubleshooting?
