Exterior / Adding fog lights to non fog light car
« on: August 01, 2011, 07:13:37 PM »
Yeah, the eBay fogs are complete pos's.  I ended up finding a set in a junkyard near here.  Now I just need a relay and mine will be good to go.

Anyone know if they need a special relay for the fogs?

Interior / Black Carpet... made easy

Does anyone know if the carpet from a 4 door is the same as a coupe

The front part is the same, sort of.  For the coupe they fill in the channels that the sedan's rear air vents go through with foam.  To use coupe front carpet in a sedan, just tear the foam out of the channels.  I don't know if you could use sedan front carpet in a coupe because the empty chanels would probably sag.

The rear bit is different, the sedan has longer wider "ears."

For Sale / Almost complete tan interior - San Diego
« on: January 25, 2011, 12:35:20 PM »
I swapped out my interior for a whole new one including seats from Creative Options. :D  So I'm selling my old interior which is old but in pretty good shape considering.  Everything came out of my '91 318i.

Everything is here in San Diego.  I will not ship anything except the speaker panels.  If you're in SoCal and want to meet me somewhere in the middle, I can work with you on that.  Shoot me a PM or email to dsbarb[at]gmail.com if you're interested.

Here are the seats.  Going on CL today too.  Driver's is on the left, passenger on the right. $250 obo(including the replacement pieces which I just bought for $150 before deciding to change my interior)

These are the cracks in the vinyl on the driver's seat.

This is the crack on the thigh support.

And these are the replacement seat bottom and bolsters to make the seats all minty new looking!

The kick panel speaker panels. $25

The four door panels.  All are in pretty good shape, the cardboard holes for the clips are all good. $80 obo

There are a few small tears but nothing big at all.

The carpet.  (The little piece is NOT included but I have a black one from a coupe I can sell.) $75 obo

And the rear seats. No tears or rips, just need a cleaning and they'll be mint. $80

The dash. $50 obo

The main crack.

And a small crack in the depressed area.

Electrical / Cool idea I thought of

Could you fit it where the check panel is?  Mine's just the useless "Put on your seatbelt" symbol so I'd love to put something useful there.

Thanks for the info, Dave.  I do, indeed, have the tan liner.

Do you usually just purchase them used, or have you found a place with some in stock?

He has spares.  See his sig line. :D

General Topics / is my m42 Done for?
« on: November 30, 2010, 10:26:18 AM »
If it broke, the car would not run.  If it's stretched out, about to break, and slapping against the guides, etc. it'll make a loud diesel-sounding rattle.  That said, sometimes when it makes that noise it's just that the tensioner has failed and replacing it can help things.

It's not that big of a deal to remove the valve cover to assess the level of wear on your chain, etc.

I suspect that, yeah, you're fucked.

It sounds to me like you're timing chain has shit the house. (That's technical-speak for almost died.) You could try throwing a new chain tensioner in there but . . .

I'd get the 2002 on the road mas ricky-tick.

Cool. Well the insulation on my carpet is attached. The stuff I am using is for roofs so it gives it a little more insulation. I am hitting the foam under the carpet with a heat gun to make sure it is completely dry. I have replaced other insulation items, like the cloth behind the rear seat.

I've got RAAM Mat per recommendations of Blunt.  I also got the carpet/fabric stuff too so I'm hoping it'll really quiet things down.  Have you driven your car with the insulation yet? How's it work?

I'll be doing this in a couple of weekends so it's good to see someone else doing it first.  I got some other sound deadening stuff but will be doing that when I swap out my interior.  Any advice on the insulation?

How-To's / Replacing Hood Liner/Insulation
« on: November 23, 2010, 10:03:34 AM »

That looks really good.  I went with a six-cylinder hood cover instead.  Sure it rubs on the air cleaner & intake manifold a bit, but it's a lot easier to install and helps quiet down all that chain drive rattle.

I want one of those but can't seem to find one anywhere. So I just ordered new insulation.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Parts Car on eBay with Custom Built Engine

Nope, because Paul Q. and I bought it.  The engine will live on in our next project which is already taking up space in my garage.  Some of the parts (the dash for instance) will make it into our race car, but others will be sold like the Haltech and some of the gauges.

I saw you post somewhere yesterday that you were getting a sweet new carbon fiber dash and wondered if you had picked this up.  Nice score and thanks for keeping me away from it.  Those itb's were looking a little too tempting...

Engine + Driveline / Spark Plugs recommended
« on: November 22, 2010, 05:47:57 PM »
I was researching this last week.  The consensus seems to be use the stock NGK plugs.  Do NOT use the Bosch Platinum plugs, apparently they suck in our engines.
