Dave here as always, but this time with great questions, instead of excellent answers!

+1 on the electrolysis q's. Seems almost magical, and a handy set of skills for any petrol head.

Off-topic discussion / Sold my red 1990 BMW 318i coupe
« on: March 01, 2012, 11:22:29 AM »
I'm in this boat.
I still have my '91 is, but I have an '04 325xi for daily duty now. I'd keep the e30 as a summer car, but I have 2 wheels for that. Track car? Perhaps. There is occasional AutoX about 2 hours from me. Rationally, I should sell her, but I know if I drive it at all, or get the wrenches out and tweak ANYTHING, I'll fall in love all over again. The e46 is a beautiful, quiet, smooth, surprisingly economical car that I simply cannot fall in love with on the same level. No joke, I shed a big ol' weepy man-tear the last day I drove my e30 home from work.
It's been an incredibly journey together, and it's so hard to part.

I thought about the coils as well. I may end up replacing them just to get everything up to date.

If you do replace the coils, look at our resident race team's coil-per-plug kit. rob_e30 can give you the info. Excellent deal, to boot!

As for the e46...there's a delay valve in the clutch line that causes that floatiness.  It can be fixed...

This is why I'm going to keep poking in here, Dave, it's a better atmosphere, and smarter minds!

I'd advise waiting on it...you're going to kick yourself later if you make the wrong decision!

The plans to jockey cars in our limited parking are already turning in my head. Unfortunately, I'm car-sitting a friend's Passat while she's out of state for at least the next few months. I'm hoping I can convince her to sell, so Betty has a spot, at least in our driveway.

I picked up "Sabine" (10 Bimmer points if you get the reference), the 325xi today, and I'm thrilled. There is a distinct "glossiness" to the way this particular e46 drives, that I'm not quite thrilled about though. The clutch pedal is heavy, yet it's action seems slow. Not sloppy, but not as "connected" as it is in the e30.

I drove them back-to-back, and Betty has a much sportier feel, and responds to shifting MUCH better. It will take a while to get used to the new, floaty clutch/shifting.

Anyway, for now, Betty is up for grabs. I'd much rather sell it to a fellow M42club member, than on the open meat market of Craigslist. The condition is shown pretty well in this thread, though I now have more (uninstalled) parts to go with the car. I'm not sure the body can be saved, there is some rust, I'll get some updated pics if anyone is interested. I will probably put her on Craigslist for $1800-2k, but I'll entertain any offers + stories as well as trades on here.

It looks like I'll be leaving the E30 fold for a while, I just purchased a 2004 325xi for a daily. I haven't decided Betty's fate yet, but there's a pretty good chance she'll be sold. I'd love to strip her down and autocross prep her, but I doubt the budget, nor my schedule will allow. If anybody in the midwest is looking for a good donor car, or a beater driver, pm me. I'd be willing to let her go cheap to a proper enthusiast!

General Topics / FEELER: Tunable MAF Conversion Interest?

Still interested, and hopefully I can convince my (very soon to be) wife that putting a MAF on Betty will be worth the moolah, so I can be a lab rat on this when it's ready for testing.

I don't know how I missed this thread for so long, but this is AWESOME! Great work (esp. on the research) I know there is a lot of info out there for building a decently powerful M42, but this is about as realistically close to my "dream engine". Can't wait to hear it run!

A 2.1 stroker is definitely an option, check out metric mechanic to get an idea. Pair that with some ITB's and you can make some great power and have a real screamer.

Cost is also a major factor lol.

Everytime this subject comes up, it forks and ends inevitably at FI and MetricMechanics. Both are excellent options, and anyone looking for power should talk to MM, even if you don't intend to use their products. They do build some serious engines out of the M42. Take a look at the stroker rally engine!

Post-script: Any time a company shows you exactly how their work is done, they are not worried about competition. Just shows how confident they are in the work and products they provide. Kudos, Metric Mechanics.

Those seem to be rated 25% higher than stockers. I'm not up on fuel theory, but that may be a bit richer than you were hoping for.

Ralph, you know I'm interested. Getting married next month, and a bathroom is due for some repairs from water damage, but I'm in for the whole package as soon as some budget is freed up.
