Yes, nobody seems to get past the "I'm going to do this" stage. Well, the motor is apart, and it's going to go back together, so we'll see what gets done to it. I'll report back, but in the meantime if anyone has done this before, I'd love to hear about it.

Hi, has anyone documented a proper port and polish of an M42? Everyone has stroked or turbo'd or bored these engines, but I'm looking for whatever I can do basically for free. ( no, I'm not going to just start grinding)

I've read comments like "port aggressively" or "don't touch the ports" but nobody ever goes into detail. I know Metric Mechanic ports these with success but as you would expect, they share no details. Since I want to spend nothing, a MM head is not going to happen.

I've got a 318is E30 that is track-only, so streetability is not a concern. It will live at the red line. The entire car is brilliant on the track, so I'm not going to swap etc. but as long as I've got it apart I'd like to help it breathe a bit better. Specifics would be very appreciated!

Thanks

Engine + Driveline / 318is

We missed each other by a week - I was at Mid-Ohio this weekend with the BMW CCA. Here's some Youtube of my little M42 chasing down a Nissan GTR. It sure was satisfying to keep popping up in his rear-view mirror lol.

Here's a pic of the car:

This car has cost me about $3000 - $400 for the car (yes, with the paint in that condition!) and the rest for Ground Control coilovers/camber plates, tires, seats, roll bar, and harnesses. The engine has 263,000 km on it.

Engine + Driveline / Compression test results

Yeah, I thought about that. I gave it a good wipe down, and the oil returned but not as obvious. When I remove the cap while idling, there is good vacuum and the engine stalls as you would expect. The oil must be leaking out after I stop the engine. I'll try a new cap.

Thanks everyone. I'll start investigating other causes of the issue.

Hi,
I've got an M42 with about 160,000 miles. I ran a compression test on it, and got these results: 190, 205, 200, 200 dry and 230, 225, 220, 215 wet. What exactly is this telling me?

I've been getting some excess crankcase pressure (some oil seeping from around the filler cap), so I'm guessing it's time for rings.

If so, is this a job that I can do without doing a complete rebuild on the engine? I really don't want to spend $2000 on it.

Thanks for your input!
