General Topics / Temp gauge question.
« on: December 25, 2011, 02:52:06 AM »
I experienced a very similar problem. I replaced my entire M42 cooling system (radiator, hoses, plastic pipe, fan clutch, T-stat, etc. etc.) and was therefore confident of the system. Would get a bouncy needle or one that acted funny sometimes (sometimes running one or two needle widths above the mid-way point with no obvious reason for it to do so). Turns out it was the ground nut behind the IP...was loose. Once I tightened it up, all was well. Rock solid.

Getting to the ground nut was not super fun, but do-able. Had the cluster out to replace a burned out dash lightbulb and there it was...loose.

Good luck!

I replaced every darn thing in my cooling system at the same time I performed the mess under the intake delete. All quality parts from Pelican. New radiator. New fan clutch. New hoses (all of 'em). New composite water pipe. New 88C tstat. New water pump. Engine runs really well. Gage shows middle indication for 10 minutes, then creeps up to 1 or 2 needle widths above half...worst case, 1/2 way again to the 3/4 mark. Engine braking cools it down, as does opening the heater core...for a while. I don't really think anything is wrong, but I don't like the fact that I don't ride on the 1/2 mark. I think I will check my ground nut behind the cluster as the gage will very occasionally "shudder" a bit and I can tap on the gage cluster and sometimes cause the needle to move a bit...but just a bit.

Thoughts?

1974 BMW 2002. Dad and I bought it when I was 15 for $1700 (this was in 1986) and we recovered the seats, overhauled the engine, and painted the car just in time for my 16th birthday. That car had the best ride on our rough Oklahoma roads...

Good times...

I would venture to guess that it is the old pitted windshield causing extra glare? My '91 windshield is quite pitted and annoying in the right sun conditions. Perhaps this is your problem?

General Topics / Aux. Thermostat Delete for M42 E30
« on: January 05, 2011, 02:20:28 PM »
Hi again,

This thread should have been titled, "Heater Hose Check Valve Delete for M42 E30"

I have found a bit more information, in addition to what I already knew and have read from the various posts. Basically, it seems I can go without the recall-sourced valve if I want to, no big worries.

If anyone is interested, you can read a bit more below:

http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2817
http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=73383

Real OEM diagram of valve in question:

And finally, as we all know, the original two threads that got me interested in deleting the mess under the intake/TB heater:
http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3621
http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2742

Thanks all.

Now just need to cross my fingers for an easy radiator fill+bleed this weekend. New Behr radiator. Forgot a new radiator cap. Need to order from Pelican pronto!

General Topics / Aux. Thermostat Delete for M42 E30

Hello

I have completed the replacement of all the rubber water hoses and plastic pipe to the side of the engine block as well as removing the "mess under the intake" on the M42. I've also replaced the thermostat, water pump and have a new radiator.

I am now beginning to put everything back together. I saw in a thread somewhere around here or R3V where the axillary thermostat in the upper heater hose into the firewall was simply deleted. I did the same but am now second-guessing myself. Before I tighten down the lower intake manifold bolts, I wanted to ask a larger audience.

Does anyone have any experience deleting this for a future daily driver? Doing a bit of internet searching, it seems it was installed after the fact for a recall, so I think it will work fine without it, but just thought I would ask. Thanks.

Quick one for the group. I have completed my own "delete" and am putting it back together. However, I also replaced all the heater hoses going into the firewall. I saw another thread where the auxillary thermostat was simply deleted and I did the same but before I put everything back together again, I wanted to ask if this is a good idea or if I should cut the new hoses and splice in the aux. thermostat. It seems it was installed after the fact for a recall, so I think it will work fine without it, but just thought I would ask. Thanks.

Hello

I am about to refresh my lower control arms and associated hardware. Am interested in some used lollipop brackets to press my new bushings into before hand.

Anybody have any spare they want to get rid of?

Thanks,

Eric S.

Also, what's the little blue "eye" just above the orange display - it's molded into the casing. It looks like a reset button or something but does not seem to move in any way.

Thanks

That was it! I didn't return it to "active" status. Now that the dot has stopped blinking, it keeps time. I feel ridiculous, but appreciative.

Thanks again,

E.

Yes, it is like it is stuck in "set" mode and not returning to "time telling" mode.
