For Sale / m42 e36 parts car OR part out in West Phoenix
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:57:20 PM »
So I think that the time has come to part ways with my e36. After the GF damaged the tail of it, I havent been able to piece her back together cosmeticly. I did a cooling system overhaul and after a long battle FINALLY got her to run without overheating.

The car is an automatic with a listed 243k Kilometers with the metric gauges still intalled. The engine isnt the original one with the car so exact miliage on the engine is unknown but she idles and runs well. It has Cloth manual seats, torn up door panels, No Sunroof and the no sunroof headliner covered in black with a small hole cut out for a sirius unit, (can be fiberglassed if willing to recover) keyless entry and silent alarm. All the fenders & body panels are there EXCEPT the rear tail trim.
She is NOT a looker as is. It has some areas with white primer, some gray here and there, some exposed body work and as said prior, a hacked up rear tail trim with some poor attempt at welding a flat piece or steel to replace it. (bad decesion to trust a friend who "knew how to do it") When it come to the unibody part of the vehicle, I think that should be scrapped but the doors and other removable parts are useable. The interior is currently messy mostly because it houses some of the extra parts. Other than the door panels, The interior is in ok to good condition.

So If your looking for a 2 door e36 with an m42 or need parts from it, Let me know.

The vehicle has a few newer parts recently installed.
-New
Radiator
Water Pump
Thermostat
upper and lower radiator hoses
2000 civic spark plug wires (cheaper replacement for m42)
valve cover gasket
fuel pump
M3 Lip mod on front bumper.
Nose panel
Fuel filter
Fuel pump relay
Volvo electric fan setup with AUX fan plug hardwired at the end
Junkyard, working AUX fan (not installed currently)

So If you need parts PM me a price for the part that you want. If you want to just take the car, im hoping to get 500 dollars for it. Im not in a major rush to sell it so im firm on that 500 OTD for the whole car.

Engine + Driveline / Is the AUX fan really needed?

I actually just wired it to the aux plug to see if the fan worked and to check if the wires were in order since the original aux fan was inop anyways. Since I removed the mech fan i thought id have a cleaner set up through the unused plug.

Apparently these can pull air through the head gasket and there can be no typical sign of a busted head gasket (milky oil, white smoke or oil in the coolant)...
Cheers, M

Would a compression test be able to tell if this is happening? I ran one and the results from the front to back came as this:
1:190
2:200
3:225
4:220

I have replaced a leaky valvecover gasket since, but im not sure it that will play a role.

Yes I do.
The original AUX fan that was on the vehicle was inop but the AC still worked well.

I recently installed a volvo electric fan to my car and Ive noticed that it pulls a lot harder than the mech fan. As it sits right now its wired into the AUX fan plug since I had a junk one laying around. So living in AZ, do you think I need the aux fan in addition to the new stronger electric fan?

I did know about the thermostat and the arrow, but I think I made a stupid error by squeezing the bottom hose instead. Thank you guys and I'll give it another shot soon.

Engine + Driveline / Our wires interchange with those of a Hyundai

Actually, I thought the same thing, but decided to gamble with the civic wires and it fires up the car fine.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but does anyone else know of any cheaper, interchangable spark plug wires? I found a slash in mine so I tried the Duralast ones from a 94 integra, but they wouldnt sit in properly. Has anyone else confirmed the 2000 civic set as an option?

Thanks for that method.

Just to be on the safe side before I get started, are there any new or other parts I should get before attempting this again?

I tested the thermostat the old drop it in boiling water way and it did open up like it should have so that seems to be in working order.

When it comes to the fan, the clutch fan was installed and that worked, but i recently went on a junkyard run and picked up an electrical volvo fan to intall so ill see if that works. The aux fan up front wouldn't turn on so I got lucky and picked one of those up too.

I THINK the temp guage is in working order, but to be honest im not exactly postive. How would I go by checking that?

When it came to bleeding it I followed the pelican parts method but also did the elevated front end way. So any guides where I should go from here?

I came across this site recently and it has been a great source of info so far. I've posted my issues on two other bmw forums with little to no help, so maybe since you guys can help me out.

I have a m42 94 318is with the engine from a 92 installed. I got it in high school & had it running  well for a few years. One day though it began to overheat on me. This made me realize That I was a stupid kid and really didnt focus on the cooling system like I should have.

So for the past 2 years the car has been my project and Im hoping to get it up and running better than before. I have purchased and installed the following items (new of course):
-Radiatior
-Upper & lower radiator hose
-Thermostat
-Water pump
-Black coolant pipe under the intake
The only thing I can think of that I have yet to replace is the thermostat switch on the side of the radiator.

When I tried to get it running the car would idle up to 25 min and not overheat, but once I drove it down the block the temp gauge would begin to move up. The car isnt loosing coolant nor does it display the traditional traits of a blown headgasket. Ive attempted to bleed the system many times and even got the heater to blow HOT while doing so. Some people say that it may just be air left in the system but Im not positive on that.

You guy seem to have more know how on these engines, So your imput would be greatly appriciated.

Thank you and sorry for the 1st post novel
