General Topics / why is my 318is a 1.8?
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:47:34 PM »
Hi the earlier 318is had the m42 1.8 the later 318is had the m44 1.9 the same engine as fitted to the original z3 I believe they changed over in 1996 or thereabouts.
Just out of interest a lot of people believe the m42 was the better engine as it was a direct descendent of the bmw racing teams touring car engine which produced over 300 bhp on individual throttle bodies. The m42 produces the same power as the m44 but slightly less torque the m44 is a bit of a lazy engine and the internals are nowhere near as able to put up with the same amount of tuning/abuse as the m42

Engine + Driveline / fitting e36 big bore throttle body
« on: August 07, 2010, 03:51:47 PM »
Hiya as far as i,m aware they are the same physically and internal bore size. I got hold of a throttle body that had been bored out by 3mm on the larger of the 2 flaps and had a new larger flap fitted.
The bigger bore has made the engine more responsive and smoother and it revs more freely not bad really the guy charges £120 exchange

Engine + Driveline / fitting e36 big bore throttle body

Hi ok i managed to change the throttle body without stripping the manifold if anyone is interested how, here,s my verdict on changing an m42 throttle body,
As it sits you cannot get to the bottom right hand nut, to get to this remove the  rubber pipe (that goes to the rocker cover) from the throttle body, then remove the two bolt that hold the semi-circular piece of steel to the front of the body. With this removed the heater unit (u shaped aluminium block with 2 pipes) can be slid forward and downward just enough to get to the nut.
From here on in its all plain sailing very straight forward, reassembly as they say is simply a reversal of the disassembly  took me no longer than 40 minutes start to finish  :D

Any help /advice gladly received

This is a picture of the hartge version of the spacer plate this punches the cc out to 2.3 litres

This is the hartge 2.1 engine I believe it is very similar to the ac schnitzer engine finding specs on the schnitzer engine is proving more elusive but as and when i find some i,l post them up

How-To's / ac schnitzer 2.1
« on: July 22, 2010, 12:37:27 PM »
Sorry to drag this off topic a bit the ac schnitzer 2.1 engine as well as employing a spacer block between the head and block also employed a longer stroke crankshaft to maintain a healthy compression ratio, details of this engine can be found quite easily via a search engine on the net google etc

How-To's / e36 328is idle
« on: July 20, 2010, 05:05:58 PM »
Hi ,erratic idle on e36 318is is a very common problem normally down to either icv, air leak after the maf meter or just general caron and gunk build up.
When i had this problem I remove the air filter cover and with the engine running slowly sprayed carburettor cleaner into the maf unit in short bursts.
I also replaced the rubber boot between the maf meter and the throttle body this can leak even if it looks ok (give the throttle body a spray while youve got the rubber elbow off). Finally check all vacuum pipes and clips especially the ones from the icv. Hope this helps ,oh just out of interest to get 2.1 litre out of a m42 engine you need a spacer plate to raise the capcity ac schnitzer used to do theese but they are very rare/ expensive. The ac schnitzer 2.1 engines produce 180 bhp this was with a tuned chip and big bore throttle body as well though. Supercharging produces similar power output and its an easy diy job

M42 Buyer's Guide / e36 318is pros and cons
« on: April 15, 2010, 02:27:36 PM »
Hi not sure if this is of any use but here goes, Icurrently own an e36 318is and have owned 2 e30 318is previously. The e36 is in my opinion a better car than the e30 overall although the e30 is more fun;)
The idle control valve can cause a rough idle problem but removing it ,cleaning it in carb cleaner and refitting it usually cures it (this also happens on the e30. All the air pipes on the m42 engines need to be in tip top condition and the air filter should be replaced regularily.
Early e36 cars can suffer water leaks into the cabin due to seal failures and coupe versions can suffer door and window seal problems.
All in all it,s just a case of having a really good look over a prospective car both are very good cars as a track car the e30 is the better car, as a daily driver the e36 is maybe just that bit nicer, but hey thats just my opinion;)
