Engine + Driveline / How to remove and replace a BMW M42 head.

Okay, so bumping a way old thread for the sake of a previous comment I made.

I couldn't find the write up I mentioned. But I just did this last night.

I pulled the belts, and pulleys. I then pulled the harmonic balancer and associated parts. I was then able to pull the covers and reseal without removing the head.

But I had more fun then you taking the whole thing apart.

Engine + Driveline / Intake cam ajustment
« on: April 23, 2010, 09:08:46 AM »
I drove my 93 318is from Florida to Baltimore last July, (80 degree weather), and got 35.5 MPG expressway mileage doing about 75 to 80 MPH.

I recently had to replace my profile gasket and of course the head came off to do it. I just made the same trip, now with with new spark plugs, and I only got 33.5 MPG at the same speeds. The only difference was the April temps are 60 to 65 degrees.

I am wondering if set my cams a degree or 2 differently when I reassembled them, or does 20 degree cooler outside temperatures make the difference.

Engine + Driveline / Thermostat stuck?
« on: April 11, 2010, 03:40:00 PM »
Are you overheating?

You can test the thermostat by dropping it in a pot of water on your stove. It should open just before boiling.

I had to bleed mine as Ryann posted above. Also when you reinstall the thermostat it has an arrow that needs to be pointed up.

You could buy a NPT pipe tap for a couple of dollars and screw a fitting or pipe nipple in there.

Engine + Driveline / Coolant loss... help!
« on: April 02, 2010, 06:58:43 AM »
Coolant loss is not normal in any circumstance. The only way for water loss is through a leak in a hose, leak from a gasket, leak from a radiator, heater core, faulty radiator cap.
Once the water is in there it should stay. Water vapor is not lost into the atmosphere, it condenses back to liquid within the cooling system. The vapor pressure of water is raised due to the system being a closed system, under pressure, and the thermostat opening below the boiling point of water. (212 degrees)
If your level is dropping you have a leak or you are overheating and the system is letting off the pressure.

Make sure you do a pressure test over time. It would take a very long time to see a small leak in a pressure test.

Engine + Driveline / Have the head off - M42 - questions

Look in the head for the valve too. I have heard it can be in there.

Its held in the block by a rubber gasket.

Check the area just above the A/C pump bracket where the head meets the lower timing chain cover. If water is leaking out of that area you need to replace the Timing Chain Case Profile Gasket. Its kind of a big job.

Engine + Driveline / Damn this. Ever seen such a fried rod live? Pics

Wouldn't the ECU control sense pre-ignition and retard the timing? That's one of the main jobs of the ECU.

These are the pic's of the torx tool from Harbor Freight Tools. I chucked the socket into a drill press and used a grinder to take off just a little metal. The original size was 7.07mm and when it was done it was 6.73mm.

There pic below show the same size socket barrel to barrel. You can see not very much was taken off.

Good idea lqbanotxano.

I will try to get the others on.
It is interesting to note that the pictures are not hosted on this site. The attachment function for posts does not like pictures so you have to create a Potobucket account and link the pics back here.
If anything happens to Photobucket these pics will disappear.
