Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Dbilas ITB's installed
« on: August 23, 2010, 07:06:41 PM »
After sitting in the garage for a year or so we finally resurrected the 318is of a friend of mine. The reason ? Some ITB's where waiting to get installed.

Also installed the Dbilas airbox. The plenum is not identical to the one made for the E36. There is a little more space to clear the brakebooster.

When finished we had to do a soundcheck :D

Next step is the MAF-delete and getting Alpha-N running.

German style :-)

Welcome Alex, it's nice to have you onboard.

JP, I think Alex was about to sell his Mosselman Turbo-kit. He wants to go NA with ITB's and stuff.

General Topics / Bigger TB for M42 ?
« on: December 31, 2008, 11:16:54 AM »
I bought the Alpina527 throttlebody on e36coupe.com. It has got a bigger diameter, bigger valve, less restriction and fully polished inside.

I can΄t say I noticed any improvement though.

LOL :)

Thanks for the replies so far. This winter I'll decide which components are the best for my needs.

Thanks for your reply Lund. What's your guess, if 50 horsepower is gained like Dbilas claims with stock displacement, is 210-220 hp with 2042 cc a realistic figure ?

M42B18 DbilasStep IV : Upgrade to 140kW / 190HP includes:

• A throttle body injector system 1453,--
• A set of sport camshafts 587,--
• Cylinderhead and Valve modification 845,--
• Complete software update 355,--
• a/N 2000 control unit to replace the 889,--

Thanks guys. Already knew the MM-boys. Just a pity they are on the other end of the ocean :D
I came across a German site with strokerkits for the 316i,318i and 318is. The 318is was 2042 cc so that must be the M47 crank with pistons swap. They didn't mention anything of headwork being done but they rate their engine at 174 hp. Is that realistic ? Upping the displacement with 250 cc and gaining an extra 34 horses (might be incl. adjusted chip)?

When I have a look at the 50 horsepower gain Dbilas claims with their setup of headwork, cams, ITB's and Alpha-N on the stock M42B18 how does that work with a bigger displacement ? What can I expect from stroking the engine and combining that with the full Dbilas-setup ? And does the stroked bottom-end still likes to be revved beyond 7k rpm's ?

A friend of mine has the M40B16 stroked to 1.8 with the M43B18 bottom-end. He has got the full Dbilas setup and went up from 92 hp stock to 155 hp.

Nice, those names are well known.

I see you manage a BRL V6 Mondeo team. Dick is driving in the BRL light class with a Focus.

Well I know a couple of people who use them on the road and they love them. There is still one version up in the range, the Competition with external reservoirs. I already had a look at the latest prototype which combines Sportline and Competion in one. Very nice stuff.

If you race BRL do you know Dick van der Donk (also racing in Ziengs-cup) ? My mechanic is Bas Roos where Dick is often to be found ;-)

Thanks JP.

Hi Froos (leuk ook NL-talig haha), I chose AST because they are a well known suspension specialist and my mechanic uses them for racing. They listen very well to their clients, R&D to fine-tune parts, pay very good attention to detail and quality and I think they give Intrax a good run for their money.

My engine (M42B18) is in need of some new gaskets etc. so I was planning on doing a complete engine-job.
I have the option to buy a pair of rallycams (Catcams) which are at the max to suit hydraulic lifters. Before fitting I would like some headwork to be done.

The mechanic who works on my car has a lot of racingstuff in store. He has a M44 1.9 (fully balanced, lightweight pistons) with a prepped M42 head (with some wild cams) on top with Jenvey ITB's and Alpha-N. It is rated at 200 hp so that is more or less my goal.

I was wondering if I should stick with the M42 block or swap it for the M44 or go with a bigger displacement. And if so, how can I achieve that + does it have a negative effect on running high rev's being a stroker ?

I hadn't introduced myself properly before, so here it goes.

I'm a bloke from Holland, 27 years old and running a business with my dad.

My first car was a 2nd generation 316i E30. Lovely car in mint condition. Still a pity I sold it. After that I bought a 320i E36 saloon. Had great fun with that car. Was a bit of a moneypit. Sold that car and bought 2 new VW's in a row. But I got bored so I bought myself a E28 520i saloon automatic. Lovely car, enjoyed the ride and the sound. After that car I bought this 318is that I still own. First owner car, 1994, imported from France to Holland in 1996.

I got a hang of driving at trackdays and the Nurburgring so I changed my car a bit.

A couple of pictures:

Styling 32 fitted with Re050A.

Bilstein B8 shocks with AC Schnitzer springs.

The aftermath.

After that my purchases went more trackorientated:

- new rod bearings
- VDO oiltemp. gauge with a AC Schnitzer console
- H&R arb's
- M3 3.0 calipers with 3.2 discs + Hawk HT10 pads
- fresh discs in the rear with Ferodo DS2500
- steel brakelines
- AST Sportline II coilovers with camberplates
- MK-Motorsport wheels with a lower offset to fit the coilovers
- MK-motorsport exhaust
- 3.46 LSD + 325i driveshaft + propshaft
- massive M3 bushings in the front trailingarms
- Sparco EVO2000 + 6-point harness
- E30 M3 EVO steeringwheel
- fire extinguisher

Meanwhile I have made some nice roadtrips to Wales/ Switserland/ Portugal/ Germany/ Luxemburg etc.

Last thing I did was attending a trackday on Spa Francorchamps 15-11.

Great track but very slippery when wet. But the car got back in one piece so no problem :)

Next month or so I will fit a rollcage and take a look at the engine for some more power. I still have some questions which I will post in the buildup section.

General Topics / Larger throttle body? Info? Power gains
« on: November 04, 2007, 07:36:18 AM »
I have the Alpina527 enlarged throttlebody. To be honest, I don't feel any difference. A friend of mine put one on his M43B19TU and had a superb increase in throttle-response.
I think the M42 TB already flows enough air.
I had the chip replaced, and that made a big difference. Better spend the money on a good remap.
