Engine + Driveline / 91 M42 vs 93 M42 Questions

As to not spread misinformation I am not 100% sure because I have only owned e30's but I thought all m42's and m44's were exactly the same as far as block and head were concerned, but like I said I could be 100% WRONG

No. e30 and e36 m42 long blocks will interchange so long as everything e30 is swapped over, but the e36 valve train differs in that the e36 uses narrower valve stems/guides and single springs vs. dual. There are other differences in the timing components that are supposedly 'better'. The m44 is a completely different animal in the bottom end.

Engine + Driveline / changing thermostat, a few questions.
« on: November 27, 2011, 07:07:29 PM »
Looks to me like you tightened the housing down on the lip of the thermostat. It can be tough to get the thermostat to stay in its countersink while installing the housing over it. I've found that the cam sensor is a lot easier to deal with if you pull the crank sensor out as well. It gives you a lot more slack to work with without risking damage to the wiring and plastic loom brackets.

Engine + Driveline / Lousy fuel economy

I don't think your mileage could be that bad without some accompanying driveability issues.

My thoughts exactly.

Either your GF drives it like she stole 100% of the time or the miles travelled/fuel filled info is whack.

Engine + Driveline / Hesitation on acceleration!

You should've noticed a slight change in idle speed with the vacuum line removed. I would strap a fuel pressure gauge to your wiper arm and go for a drive.

Pull the vacuum line off of your fuel pressure regulator while the car idles. The idle speed should kick up a bit and no fuel should be present in the vacuum line.

Did you check closely for cracks in the rubber intake boot? It's pretty common for them to split on the AFM end along the ridge where the hose clamp sits. Also check the port and plastic elbow on the bottom. Does it start hard when warm?

Pull your valve cover and check your timing gears!

Engine + Driveline / Intake plate
« on: October 27, 2011, 11:23:49 PM »
I bypassed my throttle body heater and replaced all the ccv/icv hoses with OE stuff. In my opinion it's really not a mess once you've got it out of the car, and it's actually kind of clever I think. There's a hose that comes out of the head and goes to the upper TB heater plate, and a hose that comes out of the lower TB heater plate to the right hand side 4-way fitting. Just connect the outlet on the head directly to the 4-way fitting.

The green stuff in this diagram is deleted. The red line represents the connection that is made in its place. The blue hose is what I used to make the red connection.

Did you remove the upper half of the intake manifold and check all your ccv/icv hoses?

Are you getting a check engine light? If so, Google and perform the Motronic stomp test and tell us what codes you're getting. If not it sounds to me like you've probably got a vacuum leak or fuel delivery issue.

^It's much easier to recharge with r414b than to go 134a. It is an r12 drop in that is 100% compatible with r12 compressor oil and runs similar pressures. Stock e30 condensers are also undersized for 134a so you'll be running much higher head pressure than normal, which yields shitty hot weather performance and reduces the life of your compressor.

What's wrong with your old compressor?

Engine + Driveline / Single row timing chain
« on: September 29, 2011, 09:22:10 PM »
Funny, in some circles this mod would be viewed as a downgrade. For example Mercedes has a two row "upgrade" for certain V8 w126's and there are several aftermarket two row "upgrades" for the normally single row Toyota 22R/E.
