Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / 318i swap m44 to m42

okay, I have an auto 1997 318i and blew the engine. I want to know if I get a 1994 318 complete engine (m42) will it be compatible with the transmission and everything else that is already in the car. Or will there be issues. Please let me know any other compatibility issues that may arise. By the way the m42 is from a manual car. I am very new to this and I want to know the difficulties involved in swapping the engines. Can someone please help me.
