Found a gear set cheap; thanks!

2
If anybody has one laying around I'm trying to find one for the old autocross only car. Gearset can have a million miles on it I don't care. Just need the gears to keep ship cost down, but if cheap enough can still be in a diff itself.

Email me at Jody.Justice@gmail.com

Thanks

More confusion was real OEM lists the 4422 as ended; yet that's the paper one to use on an M42 that I ordered from worldpac and installed in the pic.

Thanks Dave. It is my Wife's car and she really missed it. I've had the block and head sealed after the machine shop sitting in the trunk a few years. Glad we held onto the car cause it's too clean example to let go. Was worth getting it back up to speed. I've to clear the bench for a good friend who needs a M50 race motor built this winter. Your user name looked familiar and I noticed you posted in my "is" build thread back in sheesh 2010. It's already been 5years wow.

Anyways reference the old thread; when doing the front struts I highly recommend trimming the bumpstops if using bilsteins. Otherwise travel is very limited and ride is bouncy cause your riding on the stops with sport springs. To trim them is simple before installing. You take a screwdriver and hammer; knock off the silver base plate in an outward motion. Revels the stop; trim two knuckles off and tap the cap back on. Makes a world of difference how the front end reacts when it has correct travel.

Happy Motoring.

Put a few miles on it and leak free. Letting sit overnight to check out again. Touch up the alignment to verify everything is good; I use strings DIY setup.  Maybe some new treads and register for the road again. Needs a tag etc probably setup to run this spring and take some daily beatings off the other cars.

Will keep an eye on oil, coolant, and filters a few more early oil changes. Just fun neat cars. It's seriously a mini E30 M3 when these cars have full suspension and lightweight M20 flywheel setup.

Probably be awhile before I post again. These little cars are rare today, keep the forum alive.

Thanks man. Yeah I don't have much use for a set of cam blocks. Unless doing a dual vanos motor, which I've yet to work on :) . Buttoned up today and headed for the second drive out for testing.

I'm used to improvising and then dial with degree wheel. But the straight back cam blocks makes it a sure way to do quickly and accurate without the fuss of a wheel.

Here's an improvised lock on an S14 until degree'd by wheel later.

Well it's a late Saturday start, but almost tackled the lower inner timing case gasket. So the motor is fresh and this doesn't take much when each bolt was recently turned :)  Still just time consuming, another headgasket, another set of headbolts, and profile gasket for insurance. More permatex 99MA, and 518 sealers. I'm sure everyone has their methods but thought I'd share how to time the cams without ANY special tools....NONE.

I checked this with a degree wheel on the engine stand and measured perpendicular to the top of the head. It's 15mm to a straight edge, so adjust till have 15mm on each cam block then can verify by placing a straight edge across both cam blocks it should be perfect flat. Done. Wish my S14 was that simple sometimes.

The only gaskets on this motor are valve cover, head gasket, and lower inner timing case gasket. The rest is all permatex 51813. Could of used it on the lower timing cover but the last one went 380,000mi I figured that's pretty good.

Ok just wanted to report back. @bmwman91; To be blunt your absolutely correct. The paper is for the M42 only. Do NOT use the metal gasket on an M42.

The metal gasket has a different path traced into it where the oil passage is to the M42 jet that feeds the idler pulley with oil. If use both like I did the metal one has trace paths that cross the paper path and causes a leak under pressure. The gasket then goes to the exhaust side where I saw the most oil under pressure leaking out the side.

So started late today and tackled this. The motor is very fresh built with all new Fastenal 10.9/12.9 hardware so simple wrenching to take back down to fix it.

I'll try to attach a string of pics of the paper and metal gaskets. The jet way path that leads to the idler pulley is recessed in the cover. So the entire surfaces can be permatexed but I opt'd for just spraying the paper version with MA99 (my fav).
