Engine + Driveline / Noisy below 3k RPM
« on: January 07, 2010, 10:59:44 PM »
Well, essentially it sounds like the engines going to come apart below 3k rpm on my DD m42. Doesn't bother my wife one tick, but she's like a deaf person when it comes to hearing how the cars running while she's driving it.

Anything specific I should look into? Thanks a billion in advance.

The rack is leaking like that one in Holland that the boy saved... except worse.

I actually fixed it. In my brilliant mind I thought it would be handy to leave the PS pump closer to the acc. pulleys so I could just throw the PS belt back on and tighten it down once I swaped the PS rack out. Well it turns out that the alternator fins where juuuuust barely catching the top edge.

Thank you everyone for the quick responses and concern. All is well when you figure out that it's not your engine coming apart, just stupidity ;)

From the front of the engine. Here's some background:

My power steering rack crapped out. Removed belt until I can get a new one, which is how I bought the car. Assuming this is why he ran with no belt. This is not the issue! The issue is after pulling the belt I went to start it up. SCREECHING noise is coming from the front end of the engine. REALLY loud screeching . Like metal scraping on metal. I didn't touch ANYTHING besides the bracket to remove the power steering belt. Besides that, I took a tooth brush and some water/dawn dish soap to my oil pan to clean off some misc. gunk.

This is disconcerting to say the least. ANY HELP is appreciated. I have no idea what this could be or how it could have happend. When I cleaned off the oil pan (lower) could I have bumped the cam position sensor or something? (The little sensor next to a sprocket type gear. I'm guessing it's the CPS?)

Boner.

So you're saying that I could run 8lbs (psi?) of boost on the stock AFM/ECU with UP to 30lb injectors? Chipped or... ? I'd love to put together a turbo setup to give the 318iS DD a bit more pep in it's step. Thanks in advance!

I would go factory settings. I'm running nearly an identical setup suspension wise as you are. I fiddled with it a bit and I'm not super thrilled with "more eager" to turn. Specially when my wife drives it. Makes lane changes at 70-80mph a bit sketchy. Keep it relatively factory and it'll treat you much better and feel considerably more stable for street use.

Same story - 28-33 mpg. I cruised to 389 miles before a fill up strictly highway. I believe it worked it's way out too like, 34 or so? I went from a m20 ETA to an '03 Alero that barely hit 25mpg all highway driving, so I'm already thrilled ;)

Here's a question along the same lines... where or who do you guys go through to get your SP's? I've always gone through Schmucks, but then again, I've also been sans BMW for about a year and a half. Just jumped back into a '91 318iS DD. Going through the standard maintenance that the PO failed to do or was just totally clueless about. I imagine the plugs need to be changed out shortly here.

If you got the NKG BRK6EK's, they are pre-gapped and ready to go from what I understand.

Amen to everything said here. Enjoy that e36 M3. I went from an '88 325iS to an '84 325e, then to a '95 M3. The e30 bug will get you though. I now DD a '91 318iS and have the '84 325e in the garage going through a 2.7i stroker w/boost.

If you can, keep the 318. You wont regret it ;)

Interior / A quick heater switch question

One other thing. The slides on my HVAC panel also don't work. Is this indicative of anything else or should I just fiddle with the rear of the HVAC panel/sliders?

'Eh... I'd re-work that mess under the intake. Follow yonder thread. You don't "have" to delete anything beyond the stupidity. Tidies it up and makes it much easier to get around under there. It's nearly 22 degree's outside right now and when the sun comes up (hahahaha) I'll be out there getting rid of most of it myself.

I also wouldn't run much or far with anything taped. The PO of my car was a super bone head and duct taped the elbow from the main coolant hose -> head between cyl. #2 and #3. Leaked like a... well, leak.

Best of luck and let us know what all it was!

Engine + Driveline / Did we ever figure out the "Hot Start Problem"
« on: December 09, 2009, 02:25:42 AM »
I have a tiny bit of tach needle-wandering and a very, very mild stutter when I first start mine up. I'm def. going to check this plug out once I get the intake back on and such from cleaning up the acid trip cooling/vac/hc hoses from under there.

Systema - ICV perhaps? Ever changed or checked your plugs/wires? Any other symptoms you can narrow down?
