Yeah, I'm really hoping I don't do that again, but it's easy to get comfortable. But it probably will help, at least for a while.

Luckily I did this in a car I don't care much about. I was behind an ugly Chevy HHR exiting a parking lot. There was no traffic and the HHR started to move like she was exiting, so I carelessly started moving up and instead was looking to the left where the traffic would be. I hit the back of her car at, I don't know, 2 mph. She was pissed at first, but cooled off. I know it's my fault which sucks, because I'm usually pretty confident in my driving. Tell me this is something that can happen to anyone! I feel like an idiot.

Btw was driving a VW Golf. Damage isn't terrible but looks ugly. Mostly scraped and scuffed and my bumper has a small crack.

Off-topic discussion / What was your first car?
« on: July 30, 2010, 10:04:58 AM »
My first was an e34 525i with a 5-speed, loved that car. Then I sold it to buy a 944 Turbo which was a bad idea, maintenance-cost wise. Then I bought the 318iS.

That reminds me of a car I think Ben Carufel had at one point and was selling. I remember the great interior and I thought it had been owned by a pilot too.

Engine + Driveline / Any experience with Victor Reinz gaskets?

Thanks folks! I knew turbo m20 would be different but they were acting like the gaskets were shit.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone here has used Reinz gaskets in their m42s. I got slightly worried because I used them on my recent m42 top-end rebuild, and I saw afterwards on another forum a bunch of m20 guys (most of them boosted) complaining about the quality of them and saying they fail a lot. Any experience?

Thanks!

Well guys, I maybe have some good news. I found a Honda-certified 2007 Fit 5-speed with 40K miles for pretty cheap. Cheap enough that I can probably finance it without a down payment. Includes a 100K mile warranty.

We're going to try to work the deal out today, and if it works, I could have that car as my DD/backup and (at least for the time being) not have to worry about selling the e30. Wish me luck!

Thanks for the advice and encouragement guys. I don't know what I'll do yet, but I'll let you guys know. I would hate to see my car go, especially when it's at the best its ever been.

+1 on the store it idea... get a beater s***box and save your car
between putting 250$/month, EVERY month into a new car that looses a lot of it's value or putting maybe what... maybe 200-300$ every 2-3 months or so. think about it. what do you think your car needs to be reliable? $$ to get there vs new car payment for 5 yrs
(and the 5-6k would be more appropriate up north ;))

just some thoughts...

Man if I was only paying $200-300 every 2-3 months or so I'd be in heaven. It's been more like 200-300 every two weeks or so!

Keep the e30 in the garage. It will be worth much more than you have in it someday, enjoy it on the weekends, and try to score a newer bimmer for dd.  That's my plan at least. I just intend to continue dumping money into it, and once I decided that was the path, it makes it much easier. I know it will cost me, and I know it will continue to reward me.

If you are happy with ~$3-4k for it, try to sell it to an enthusiast. At least you won't have as much guilt that someone might be beating her.

I'd LOVE to man, but I probably will need the money for a down payment. I have no money at the moment because I've put it all into this car. I'll probably end up in a Honda Fit or something.

I totally understand what you are saying on the cost.  However, I will say this; once you get all the silly little issues resolved, they are CRAZY reliable cars and- as you have found out- return one of the most satisfying driving experiences on the planet.
That's basically the reason I opted to put all of the money into it that I did. But I've just realized recently that even though I've put a lot of money into it and replaced all sorts of stuff, I don't know that I can ever really be confident in it. I don't feel like I could drive the car to Las Vegas without a problem, but maybe I'm just paranoid.

Obviously it's an awesome car and tons of fun and I'd hate to see it go, but I'd be willing to lose it if it meant getting a car that I can depend on for at least a few years and that maybe won't cost me as much. I need to be saving up for some stuff too at the moment. Insurance might go up but fuel cost should go down, I'm definitely looking for a car with good fuel economy.

I actually was depressed driving my wife's E46 the other day instead of the E30.  Now that is a pathetic addiction...
My dad has an e46 and I had to drive it a lot when my car was in pieces in the garage. Made me miss my car, as solid and confident as the e46 feels.

I'd rather see you keep it and use the forum and such to keep your cost of ownership down and keep another E30 from getting thrashed by a lame owner.
Well who knows, maybe I can't sell this thing, or maybe I can't get approved for a new car. I hate the thought of the car being destroyed by some jerk but I'm between a rock and a hard place. It'd be an understatement to say I can't afford to continue the way things have been costing me so far.

Thanks for the ideas - I'll try to see if I can get $4K, obviously it'll be great if I get more.

The head work was done because the car was burning coolant, but it was never overheated while I owned it. The radiator was replaced because it had a slight leak about a month before.

The A/C thing is also not too big of a deal. I'm trying to find a used little compressor control unit because mine was faulty. Shouldn't cost too much to fix.
